  • Open Source Photo/Image Re-Sizer Apps...

If you have any of the latest flavours of Mega-Mega-Pixel Digital Cameras, then you've either encountered the often bloated and cumbersome Image Management Software they come with for M$ Windoze... or if you use any Linux OS distributions on your computers, finding a non-command line, fully GUI application for the same job is nearly next to impossible. But finally, I have located, downloaded, installed and successfully used the following applications for the bulk processing-resizing of images that you might also enjoy using on one or both operating systems and they are completely free as well. These apps will take the busy and difficult work of slimming down your .jpg and .png images in quantity to the right size for web posting and reduce your hard drive storage clutter as well:

    For Windows:

    FastSTone

For a Variety of Linux Distros:

    BAIRES

Cool. After using command line resizing on Linux, I have since moved to command line resizing on Windows as well, but mainly only when I have a large number of images to resize.

I just remembered having the same problem with the higher definition videos created with the same Sony Cybershot Digital Camera I have been using religiously for all my project/build instructional videos. To solve the conversion of the videos over to the smaller footprint of the FLV format, I found this Windo$e App called RIVA FLV ENCODER. The free version can be downloaded and works in a very straightforward manner to reduce the size of the bulky videos quickly and efficiently:

If you have WINE installed on any of your Linux Distros, you can run this MS-Windoze application along with any other MS applications as well.

I wouldn't say Wine works for all other MS applications as well, unless you are purely stating actual Microsoft programs. I know for a fact that it will not work with any of the past 5-6 years of AutoCAD.

Damn Skippy, Brad... Indeed, I was over-generalizing a bit about the broad based nature of Wine (which probably deserves to be called WHINE). It certainly does not keep current with the later flavours of Microsoft products...but just as CIGWYN is Linux as an overlay on a Micro$oft platform... Wine is a poor substitute for any full blown Windows app that demands as much as a Computer Aided Design application demands. But in the narrow context of these smaller apps...Wine can be a life saver when there is no other way to run a much needed Windows application because the MS box is busted. But...with all that said... here is an article on this very problem...and perhaps a way to make it work on AutoCAD Rev. 14 (or perhaps earlier versions?):

Um just a question but why not take all the pictures in a reduced size on your camera to save work later? Or is this a very specific size you need?

After downloading Photoshop a few times and going through the cracking process I got sick of it and downloaded GIMP

That makes perfect sense to me as well, Geoff ...but the reason I chose the higher definition image size was because I try to memorialise most of my auto repairs and want the zoom capability so I can zoom in and do screen prints of selected areas of these images. I can't tell you how handy idea that turned out to be when I was up in my attic last summer, trying to teach myself AC repair and not knowing whether or not the new equipment I was installing would wire up in the same fashion for all the electrical connections at the air handler, the house thermostat and the condenser outside with all their various and complicated parts and pieces. The only time I worry about the reduction in size of the base images is when I am trying to share something via posts in here and few other forums...or when I am transferring blocks of images or videos to my photobucket. Besides... the apps I mentioned above work very quickly and efficiently in prepping large numbers of images for these purposes.

As for the photo/graphic software issue... my needs are to GIMP what a paper aeroplane is to a 747. That application is a bit too much for what I usually need. Instead... I like either xpaint or mtpaint on my Linux OS for my general use...they most closely emulate MS-Paint and get the job done.

I'd have to check to make sure, but on my 12mp camera, even the lowest resolution is something like 1600x1200. So that is why I often use my old point and shoot for stuff I'm going to post on the web.

That is exactly what I did. And, I've even installed IM on Windows to do the same, although I haven't written a script for it yet. But, I am learning C# right now, so maybe I can write something with it.

Gentleman...I wonder if your would not mind sharing the script with perhaps a lite instruction of how to set it up for those of us that don't usually use BASH (Lest we get "BASHED")

Also... I read a post by Pocket-Rocket on the side topic of Chrysler Hemi Motors... and in one reply, he installed a greyed out embedded rectangle CODE box that contained what he called a "Wall of Text" with an array of lengthy, informative and detailed facts. Am I right to assume that using this technique requires site member Hyper Text Mark-up Language privileges? Or...is it something any site member may indulge... (but in my case...being on a Life Sentence For Special Super Secret Probation for Wordiness...not too often?)

Anyone can do it if the forum programming is set up for it. It's just [.code] and [./code] respectively without the . , just like for img and quote tags.

Thanks P-R... I'll try to use this technique as sparingly as a Chef uses Saffron...

If you've got your photos all in one directory it can be as simple as this
                            Code:
                            for pict in *; do <somecommand> $pict /tmp/$pict; done
Where <somecommand> would be your imagemagic command with associated arguments. The example assumes the last argument is the destination and everything will go in /tmp when processed.

Here is the one I use. Fill in the [brackets] with your own options.

                              Code:
                              for i in $( ls *.JPG); do convert $i -resize [pixel width] [prefix]_$i; done;
Basically the same as above, but with the commands listed, and only for files ending in .JPG (.jpg will be ignored).
