  • MSD Rant

Well I am done ever buying or recommending MSD stuff to anyone. I have only had 1 MSD product not fail in short order or be bad out of the box. I have a set of MSD plug wires still on my S-10 that have been going strong for 5 years but I did crimp them myself.

This last incident was a set of wires for a 396 Chevy. They were ready fit and all went on fine but when I went to time the distributor (Pertronix) I got a shock that went right up my arm and into my chest. Scared the living shit out of me so I checked all the wires and they were all pressed down firm. So I tried again and got the same blast up my arm. So I timed it by shutting the engine off while I adjusted the distributor and got it time but it just misfired like crazy. So I checked the cap for cracks and checked all the plugs for problems, it was all fine. Ran to the store and bought a cheep Autolite set just for a test and the car ran like a top.

I have used a lot of MSD stuff that has failed:
    - DIS4 (failed within a year MSD admitted at least 1%failure rate. At least it came with a bypass harness just in case it failed LOL)
    - MSD GM Coil Packs (failed before the DIS4 on same car replaced under warranty at the sore and they all failed again. GM units have never failed)
    - GM Coil packs to DIS4 adapters (all melted around the terminals and yes I used di electric grease)
    - MSD Wires for a GM 4.3L ready fit. (Failed with misfire condition in less than 1 year)
    - MSD GM Remote mount coil for my Trooper (filed in a few weeks. Made in China sticker on the coil)

So I will avoid them like the plague now. I feel they are just well advertised overpriced crap just as bad a FRAM.

My S-10 has a full Crane Cams ignition and I have never touched or adjusted a thing since the day I put it in and all the parts together were hundreds of dollars cheaper than MSD equivalent

I have a rant about Centerforce but I vented that on the Isuzu forum a while ago.

thanks for spending money on crap so i don't have to!

i have to say, i've never had the "pleasure" of working on MSD anything, but at this point, it sounds like a good thing.

never had a problem with my msd wires. only reason i stopped using the first set was i found black wires instead of the weathered dirty red ones. made both sets myself.

I always had better luck with Accell brand for street performance. (old school) Of course I prefer cutting and crimping the set myself also.

Sorry you had so many failures but thanks for passing on the info.
