While the Lion populations of the Serengeti plains and in Kenya are steadily diminishing... in part due to the constant intra-species rivalry they foster with those of the Hyena Clans... It is the Leopard that continues to hold its own to the astonishing tune of 500,000 animals in their standing population. This is primarily due to their method of hunting and what they do once they have caught what they have killed. Unlike the Lions...who have to fight off disgusting, yipping groups of Hyenas almost every time they make a kill... a Leapord...so much smaller than its Big Cat Cousins in physical size but possessing such enormous strength, can grab a 200-300 Lb. dead Spring BucK in their teeth by the throat and carry their fresh kills up into the safety of the local tree tops (often...walking backwards during these climbs) and then feed in relative comfort and safety...without losing the better part of their kills to those ravaging scavenger Hyenas or even...some opportunistic Lions nearby.
