While trying to cobble together a decent and long-lasting HVAC repair in my home, I allowed our four cats the run of the outside porch for weeks on end while necessarily working on things. But sadly...they began to show signs of discomfort and scratching that prompted my closer inspection of them all. They were all covered with fleas that had hatched out during recent damp weather from the adjacent yards outside where the dogs owned by my neighbors paraded around.
It is simply impossible for an animal to be able to rest for any length of time when being eaten and drunk alive by so many thousands of these bug parasites tormenting them. In time... their populations can explode... and that is exactly what was happening. I had to do something soon to overcome this horrible infestation...and so I will explain the best manner to get this job done quickly and properly and share this solution with any and all folks whose animals have to deal with these disgusting bugs.
During the Dark Ages... there was so much fear and uninformed animosity against cats that so many superstitious people destroyed these animals in droves as suspected "familiars" for Witches and Warlocks. In the offing... the rat and mice populations climbed to unprecedented heights and since these vermin enjoy living in such close proximity with their mammalian cousins ...they brought along their cargoes of Fleas ..infected with Bubonic Plague... right along with them into the newly densely populated places that were the urban centers of western Europe. The population of Europe was decimated by the deaths of over 20,000,000 people during what was then called... "The Black Plague". So much for being "Cat Haters"....
Bubonic Plague along with other infectious diseases like Tuberculosis are, in more recent times, making a surprising comeback in the western world, due in part to the often careless use of prescription anti-biotics that, in the absence of patient compliance in taking theirs meds completely... allow so many pathogenic organisms the chance to develop resistance to these drugs... such as MRSA (pronounced "MURSUH"); an acronym for 'Methcillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus'. God forbid anyone should ever get this disease in cuts or wounds...because the only thing that will save you from a miserable death is the introduction of live fly maggots to eat away the necrotizing tissue and stop the infection (this would NOT be the time to apply Diatomaceous Earth to kill the little beggars!)
This prologue is necessary to drive home the point that eradication of the animal/insect vectors of these diseases is vital to removing their negative effects on a good quality of life we all need ...and fortunately in this case... this can be done very safely and effectively overcome... without the use of dangerous organo-phosphates or other noxious chemicals that can harm human adults and children as well as all animals exposed to them.
The solution is quite simple and comes in the form of Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth. not the version used in Pool Filtration Systems. As we all know...Diatoms are microscopic animals that take pure Silica from sea water to construct the sharp and angular shapes of their glass-like bodies and it is the presence of these millions upon millions of glass skeletons that makes up this bizarre, innocuous off-white powder. The process of killing insects with this stuff works perfectly well because of the unique exoskeleton design possessed by all insect species... They all "wear their bones" on the outside and keep their soft parts inside and free from harm and easily drying out. These Diatoms in quantity can become wedged in the external joints of all insects and soon grinds and wears these joints down to a fail point that allows their inner moist parts to be dessicated by this very same powder.
