  • And now for something completely different...

We've been working on something out of the ordinary at the shop. I am going to post some pics during the next few days and want to see if anyone can figure out what we are working on.

Sorry Ben but you can't play.

    Let's start with these.

Pictures are bits and pieces of the project. Can you identify what any of the parts are?

      Maybe this?

I thought there would be a few guesses by now as to what the parts were. Here's a couple more pics.

I forgot about you seeing it. We had planned to have it done this week but are still looking for some missing pieces.

I was thinking rear suspension, but after the last set of pics, I'm not so sure now. The first ones looked like a hub assembly with strut pocket and lateral control arms to me.

No suspension. All engine parts except the clutch. Here's a few more to look over.

Is it one of those old radial aviation engines? That would explain parts put in the pattern you have them in (like the plugs).

It is old... actually older the the '40s. The engine is for a '22 Olds 43A but was available in some Chevys. The engine was out of the car and in pieces when the car got to us. The distributor mount and oil pump, both made from pot metal, had been over tightened and broken. The gears inside the pump and from the distributor drive were worn out. The springs inside the clutch were broken and most of the pieces had been lost. For some reason, you can't run down to the local parts store and pick up replacement parts for this thing so everything had to be made from scratch. With the exception of clutch springs we have everything ready to put back together.

The engine was built by Standard Power Company and is pretty cool with it's old technology. It is rated at forty five horsepower and has electric start, external pushrods, exposed solid lifters, felt inside a slotted valve cover to wick oil onto the rocker arms, gear driven generator, generator driven distributor and oil pump, copper lines inside the engine to route the oil to the mains and a manually adjusted spark advance.

The car features an unsynchronized three speed transmission, band brakes on the rear wheels operated by mechanical linkage, no front brakes, leaf spring suspension with no shocks and wood spoke wheels.

I look at this a pretty much a once in a lifetime experience as I doubt that there will be any other '22 Olds' coming into the shop.

It is safe to say, they don't make cars like that anymore.
