Hi I have a 1994 camaro with a 3.4 litre v6 in it with a 5 speed in it.The engine is in need of a rebuild and since I will have it torn down I was wondering what kind of performance upgrades I can do to it.I already have a jet performance chip for it and I am getting a cold air intake for it.I was told that I could use the intake, heads, and rollerrockers off of a late model 3400 series engine from a w car (monte carlo or lumina). Is this true? So far all of these engines are dohc motors and my camaro is not or is there a different year of this motor that doesn't have the dohc or will the dohc parts actually work?If so what kind of cam and pistons should I use and what other modifications do I have to do?Will my fuel injection work on that setup or will I have to use injection from the 3400 series motor?will this all work with my computer and the jet chip?If this setup will not work does anyone have any sugestions for me.I would like to get as close to 300 horses out of it as possible and still keep the v6 in it.I do not want to put nitrous, turbo,or a supercharger on it.I still have to stay in somewhat of a budget.Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Actually... this is thread deserves to be located in the more "On Topic" location in here...
...and if you use the Advanced Search feature with your high points covered... there will be many others who have already plowed this field for you. You are among friends and are Very Welcome at:

If you decide to do something that is strictly "Iron Head" related... I have all the necessary images of a complete tear down of your engine and the scoop of new and performance parts/part numbers, etc. that will modestly improve the horsepower and performance of the 4th Gen F-Body 3.4L V6 Engine at this site:

...But... if your appetite for horsepower leans toward a stronger and more robust 3400 Hybrid "Aluminum Solution"... Please consult with Ben (sappyse107) (WOT-Tech) who is one of our primary site sponsors, as well as John (Forced Firebird) for their access and expertise to the right equipment and proven performance parts and procedures to give you what you wantLast edited by 60dgrzbelow0; 03-18-2010, 09:57 PM.

Gelb... there is a lot of information around that is just pure myth on the notion of squeezing enormous amounts of horse power out of a normally aspirated GM V6 engine block with Iron Heads that simply has too many "Breath-Out-Breathe-In" physical restrictions and limitation problems to make this happen. These are the same folks who will tell you that it,
"It IS possible to pick up a Turd from the Clean End"
... if you get my drift.
Nobody here is going to discourage you from doing or trying anything... but if you consider that you can get a modest bump in horsepower and torque above the stock level of 160HP by the addition of a decent camshaft, Cloyes "True" Roller Timing Set, CompCam Roller-Tipped Rockers and some Pacesetter Ceramic Coated Headers and perhaps an easier breathing exhaust... then a more modest approach might make more sense for you to try that won't get so exotic and expensive and leave you with the "Buyer's Remorse" if the car does not pull a wheel stand from one stop sign to another. What can you live with at the beginning that fits your budget and other needs relating to driving this fine car around each day...and have it doing that more often than just sitting up on jack stands waiting for the next BBD parts? Okay does anybody know of any place that I can talk to on the phone that might have any kind of a rebuild kit for my engine that would have good knowledge of this engine.I've talked to summit racing and performance automotive warehouse so far and they couldn't tell me much and they also didn't carry any rebuild kits for this engine. If i wanted to buy the parts from them i had to buy the parts individually.which can get kind of costly.my engine is in need of a full rebuild.this is the first v6 that i have ever built but i have done v8's before.any help or advice is appreciated.

You seem a bit too brittle... and impatient to have taken the time necessary to look over my photo bucket site and get the lay of the land and see what there is to see, or even to have thoroughly investigated this site yet. You need to get a starting point in your mind as to how to go about doing this the right way. The reason Napoleon was arguably the Greatest Battlefield General was because down to the last Magnum Champagne Bottle he had his troops supplied with for food and soups so they would not starve..and even down to the last, brass buckle it took to keep a soldier upright and ready to fight in combat.... he knew how to PLAN. That is what you need to think like: A logistics officer.
You have to create a plan (or if you decide to get real smart ...real fast) you will use everything on this site that has already been laid out for you). If you don't scour this place (and my free goodies as visuals on my photo bucket) yourself before asking to have the Whole Engine Re-Build Enchilada dropped on your Dinner Plate... you will lose the good will of those who really want to "help those who help themselves". Trust me... the Senior Members , Mods and Admins here will not suffer Fools and "Beaters" (People who try to beat their time... and waste it). If you lean in that direction...your posts will die of loneliness in here... and they will wisely drop any interest in your problems... like a Turd from a Tall Indian..
On the main page... I penned an article that describes everything you will need to know and encounter concerning this re-build. Read it. Print it. Use it. Unless you are serious about wanting to do all the difficult and expensive leg and arm work to tear things apart and put them back together correctly...you should consider buying a GM 3.4L HT Crate Engine (Long Block) and calling it even. If not...you will wind up spending just as much time and money...only more so...building this engine right and on your own. Remember that quality components, special tools and the skills necessary to use them and component upgrades cost more than your basic parts to buy at AutoZone or other stores...in fact that might be the best place to start... Just belly up to the counter at one of these stores and pose your same broad questions about what it will take to do this re-build right...and ask them to compare it with the crate motor solution and see where the chips fall.
Anyway... Get yourself a Yellow Legal Pad and sit down here with a Diet Coke or Pepsi...and just read... and plan...and write down what you think you might need...create folders on your computer hard drive relating to the sub-sets of things you will need to either get or do...and as you encounter information...cop it and save what you will not be able to commit to your engine building institutional memories. And then come back with questions you cannot find answers to when you think you have a basic re-build strategy worked out... Yes?Last edited by 60dgrzbelow0; 04-28-2010, 04:07 PM.

To back up what 60* says, I have tons of bookmarks in my browser that I haven't even used the information on those pages yet, but I plan to one day. These engines don't have close to the aftermarket that a V8 does, but people have found out over the years how to get good amounts of boost in performance on them. Best of all, they aren't stingy and will chime in to help. For your power goal, I would suggest getting ahold of an aluminum top end from a 3400 like you mentioned before and go that route. There are a few on here that can help point you in the right direction for going with a hybrid to get done what you want to do. Two that immediately jump into my head are ForcedFirebird and Betterthanyou. You can reach your power goals quite easily, if not pass them with an aluminum top end, you just have to be patient and gather some parts and do some digging for information.-60v6's 2nd Jon M.

250HP from iron heads is possible. I used to happen back in the day when the 60* was popular in miget racing. It may not happen on 87 octane with un touched heads. But with the right combo it is possible. But don't count on your street Camaro putting out much over 200.
There are no rebuilds in a box type kits but Federal Mogul sells all the gaskets, bearings and hard parts you will need for a full rebuild. http://www.power-21.com/federalmogulpower21i/
Before you start talking 3400 heads this and forged pistons that give us a budget you have to work with. It will help us give suggestions on where to put your money and what to avoid.1993 EXT. CAB, 3.4L V6 TBI, 5spd manual. Sonoma

and no matter what you do (be it 3x00 swap or stick with the iron "boat anchors", you should at LEAST swap to an obd-1 computer system so as to be able to tune and get the most efficiency/power out of whatever you do. I'd listen to 60* first though and get a good grasp on what your budget/goals have in common and then go from there. Bob's photobucket page helped me out numerous times before i ever dug in to my 3.4
