  • She started!!!

    1996 Grand Prix SE Turbo
    ---------------------------------------------------
    Update:
Vacuum at idle is about 20-21 in.-Hg.
Oil Press. is about 40-42 psi at idle
    No knock detected so far
    No strange noises
    No DTC's
    No fuel leaks
    No exhaust leaks
Only one small oil leak at turbo feed, a very slow/weak leak (had to drill out bad aluminum nipple, probably need new braided line. One is on the way as we type )
    No smoking out tail pipe
    Starts right away now

    All systems are go, lol
    END UPDATE---------------------------------------

    Well, the car started!!!

I had HP Scanner up and there were no errors, no DTC's, no fuel leaks.

AFR Idles at 12.5. But then I have 36 lb/hr injectors programmed as 32.44 lb/hr. Better safe then sorry.

I only ran it for about 15 seconds, I need to put the anti freeze in. Something I was waiting to do just in case I needed to tear back into the engine.

    All gauges worked.

I need to tie down the battery and finish the down pipe. But hooraah!!!

And she idles very nicely. Such sweet sound to my ears. Gotta love that feeling of victory.

Back to work, I'll try to get a video soon. But don't hold your breath yet. I have much more to do.

    Later guys

You sure are moving along fast. honestly when I first saw your threads I thought hmm, this project will never finish or it will be dragged out for a couple years... LOL

I don't recall the first thread but seems like a month or less from announcement to where it's at now. Good job!

When you drive it and boost hits though is the real test.

Yup, WOT will be the final test.

Thanks man, I gave it my best. I put in 6-8 hours a day, 3-4 days a week but the time spent was dragged out. I would sit and think about my next move for a while. Few times it prevented me getting ahead of myself forgeting to do something. But thats how it goes.

I'm confident the boost will kick in when it should as it should (knock on wood).

And I must say, wow, the turbo really muffles the exhaust well. I recall what it sounded like w/o turbo and there is a big difference. Before, it was a little too loud. Now it should be just right.

Again thanks for the props. I couldn't have done it with out all the help from 60degreev6 and the members within. I owe you all a big THANK YOU!

I'm sure it will boost, but your tune is the real challenge. Remember, baby steps, however tempting it may be to hammer it.

Absolutely. The tune comes first before I have fun.

I have a few tuning guides and read them several times over when I had the time indoors.

I have about $60 dedicated for fuel during the tuning process. So I won't have to worry about that. And my laptop, I set up a user account dedicated to tuning. I reduced wireless and other un-needed functions like file indexing. I have the virtual memory and paging files on the RAM instead of the HD. There is no sleep/hibernate functions after so many minutes. Basically, the user account is set up to be a pro tuner platform. Plus, my laptop is kick ass. 2x AMD64 2.1GHz w/ 8 gig ram, 17" HD screen. I bought it at 1/3 the price since the "M" key was an "N" key, so I have two "N" keys and no "M" key. It doesn't bother me any, I saved a lot.

And I'm sure you all will see me more often in the tuning section of this webpage.

Before I have my fun, this car will be very well tuned. It's just my nature.

edit: Of course, any tuning advise is welcomed. I'm always up for suggestions from professionals and serious hobbiests.

Don't get me wrong, I would LOVE to provide a video right now. But I'm not going to start it up again, yet. I need to replace the turbo oil feed line. The connector has a pin leak. It's because I had to drill out a snapped aluminum nipple. I thought I got it good but apparently it broke the sealing ability.

New hose is on the way.

I will borrow a camcorder later this coming week. Hopefully I'll have a good rough tune then.

If all goes well, I'll take her out on the parkway when it's open, no traffic. There is a specific spot I know of where I can punch it hard for a few miles and no cops can post w/o being seen way ahead. There I can probably get a slow rolling start to a nice top speed, safe top speed. I won't go past 120, not sure how the tires will handle that. But it will provide a nice video moment,

And then a few walk arounds, exhaust note, general driving, ect.

When I am completely done with the engine and the tune, I will have many nice videos. Until then.....

Though, my wife is nervous. She'll get over it soon enough. She said, "It sounds like you put a jet engine in there somewhere." LoL, close enough.

When it is all tuned up, I'm going to have to take her for a 0-90 WOT run.
