I got a free month of Xbox LIVE Gold for free for signing up (was going to go the free Silver route). At any rate, in case anyone wants to add me on there, my gamertag is tasios77 since that is my characters names in FFXI and WoW. Suddenly I look like an obsessive gamer.. >.> Too bad I hardly play much of anything lately

I paid $0 for the 360. Wii costs $$$ Not knocking it. I helped Ben and his parents break in their Wii before Christmas, it was fun, lol.

i did a similar tapeing on a P4 heatsink... about half of the outer surface area got covered, but it did allow all of the internal fins to receive airflow and consistently ran ~5*C cooler with the masking tape in place...

I thought the guy that I saw do the tape deal on the interwebz was a moron for taping up a heat sink until I thought about it and the way heat flows... Most people also stand their unit up but mine is laying horizontal (just like you see in the pics) because of how heat flows. It sucks because I put it up in the top shelf of my entertainment center beside my VCR (the JVC thing above the makeshift center channel that never gets used) and it got a little warm for my liking. I found an old old old case fan I had in the shed that came out of a very very old mainframe we scrapped out in electronics class back in high school. It's the old school ones that measure about 6 x 6 x 1 1/2, and it can move some air lol. I plugged it into the switched outlet on my receiver since that's the only thing that sound can come out of for the 360. It's a bit on the noisy side, but easily tuned out and well worth it since the cheap particle board was getting a bit on the warm side. It all stays nice and cool now.

Next thing you gotta do is mod the 360 to play burnt games. If you don't give a shit about xbox live, that is.
I softmodded mine, but it was a first gen and easier to do. Used it until i got the red ring of death and pawned it off. Didn't know of the fix and was too lazy to figure out what was wrong with it haha. Got $60 even though it was broken, so a working one should get at least a hundred.

Yeah, 360 has some neat stuff. I had the free membership for a month. xbox then broke now I'm back to computer gaming.
http://forums.xbox-scene.com/ and http://forums.afterdawn.com has some really good info on modding them. The first thing you gotta do though is figure out what type of DVD drive you have in your xbox. Then basically you have to hook up the sata cable from the DVD drive in the 360 to your computer and turn them both on. You have to then extract the DVD drive's "key" from its existing firmware and put it into a custom firmware found on the web. Then you flash the dvd drive with the new custom firmware and you're able to play burned games downloaded from the pirate bay. (on dual layer DVD's). The hardest part is getting the computer to recognize that the 360's drive is connected (at least for me)
It took me a couple weeks and I even broke the 360 for a while, but I got it working. You can even pick a firmware that controls the laser power usage. High power loads games faster, but wears out laser quicker. Low power takes forever to load games, but laser lasts longer. I would pick one in the middle. I picked the low level laser usage and the laser would give up when trying to copy games to the HD.
I'm not exactly what type of DVD drives are in the newer ones though. Each different drive has a specific way to mod them and needs the correct firmware.
Or you could just go all out and solder in a chip. I think the newer ones come with switches that turn it off when you want to play xbox live and not get banned.

wowsers! I guess it's a good time to see if I can glom a busted x-box and get one into my collection of consoles. Good thread, I love new knowledge. My Sega Genesis with 32x and cd-rom is still jammin' after all these years.
If you ain't rock and roll, you must be driving a Honda
I had my Halo 3 edition repaired recently (By MS), came back with the case damaged. I was quite irritated. I thought about doing it myself, but MS was fixing them for free...

Yeah, my bro-inlaw couldn't find his paperwork, hence him buying a new one and me getting this one. The down side is from what I've read on Xbox LIVE is ANY modifications done can get your console banned, which includes me fixing MS's jacked up cooling design... I've thought about getting a HDD for it but after reading the fine print, I'm almost ready to drop a little more coin for a genuine HDD instead of a Hong Kong knock off.

Yeah, it's probably in the fine print, but there's no way to detect your cooling mod/fix. Hard drive is a little iffy, I've thought about doing mine. I think you just mirror the drive and resize the partitions. Other than capacity, it would be identical.
