  • K&N Cone Filters

    I recently bought this...
Buy K&N High-Flow Original Lifetime Universal Clamp-On Air Filter: Performance, Premium, Washable: Flange Diameter: 3.5 In, Filter Height: 5.5 In, Flange Length: 0.625 In, Shape: Round Tapered, RU-3550: Air Filters - Amazon.com ✓ FREE DELIVERY possible on eligible purchases

While checking out the filter, on the very end of the rubber cone it says...

    "OIL BEFORE USING"

Do they really sell these things unoiled and don't mention it ANYWHERE on their site or on the box or ANYWHERE aside from printed in tiny black letters on the actual cone? I thought for sure they would have just came preoiled since my K&N drop-in replacement filter did.

They didn't give you any oil?? That SUCKS!!!
Many years ago (35 or so) I worked as a motorcycle mechanic and K&Ns were mandatory for any kind of performance... As I remember the cone filters did NOT come oiled... They DID have a little package of oil for you to use.. However ALL of the car filters I've bought have come oiled.... The GOOD news is, a parts place, Advanced Auto is where I got it,, sell cleaning and oiling kits for around $10.. They give you a spray bottle of cleaner and an aerosol can of oil... You can probably get 10 or more cleanings out of a kit..
    Hope this helps...

Also the oil is red so you can see where you've missed when you put it on. With that said, if the filter media isn't red, it isn't oiled. When I bought a drop in for the 91, it was obvious it was oiled just by looking at the bag it was in when you pulled it out of the box.

The filter media is slightly red/pinkish but it doesn't feel oily at all nor was there any in the bag it's very clean.

Is the filter red or white? It should be red meaning it's pre-oiled...
EDIT: then it's oiled. If it was pure white then it would have no oil...... Put a paper towel on the media and see if the corner of it soaks up any oil..
