New eBay listing oddity / trend.

Check the “best offer” auction closer the next time you want something.

I have found several that give an item away cheap to those smart enough to actually read the auction,
which most don’t.

Auction will be like $14 Buy It Now or Best Offer.

Read the auction and at the bottom of the pages it says send a best offer of $10 and its yours
with free shipping.

As they know many wont read it and just pay the $14, when they really only want $10.
They are glad to sell it cheaper if you’re smart enough to read it.
Odd, cool, but just another trick on the lazy eBayer.

I was looking at tweeters n led driving lights when I noticed the new trend.

I'm about to file a shipment not received claim for a Garrett BB Turbo I won if I don't get proof of shipping within the next day or two. I noticed while checking specifics that under payment is typed "immediate payment of US $600 is required" although the auction ended with a winning bid of $388. The seller committed to shipping it when I inquired after a week but I have no indication that he's done so as of yet.

If Ebay really wants to get serious about fraud and laim participants they'll hold off releasing payments to sellers until the buyer receives the item. That will encourage sellers to ship as fast as payment is made, as well as reduce the chance they'll try to rip anyone off since if it's not right on receipt they don't get paid and incur return shipping charges.

I have no problem with that up to a point, but considering ebay also offers online shipping and updating the buyer as to the cause of the shipping delay can be done free of charge, there is no excuse for having not shipped the item when you received payment on the 29th of Sept. UPS is open 6 days a week. I'm sure the average seller wouldn't be happy with not being paid and not being notified as to why more than a week after auction end. It's my $398 on the line vs. his nothing. Hope you can understand my lack of sympathy.

Thats the whole point of them trick auction, as folks get to excited voer a low price and don't read.

Funny when ya see folks losing it over a $9000 video camera they paid $30
for when the auction said it was broken for parts only. Or the famous xbox box, people are to eager for a deal and don't read between the lines right.

The object is to make it legit, not easy for crooks to be crooked with the use of hidden clauses. It was an open auction with no indication of a low price as it couldn't be determined until auction end and the comment under payment is non specific such as it lacked "in addition to winning bid cost" perhaps that's why the total payment due I requested from the seller matched the winning bid including shipping exactly. In all likelyhood that comment was a left over from a previous item who's auction template was used for the current item. It wasn't a trick auction, either the guy is slow or not happy it wasn't bid as high as he hoped.

But thats the hitch, auction on ebay are legal binding contracts to buy or sell.

How ebay set it up.

And if you ever dealt with contracts, there are always screw you caluses in them that they hope you don't bother to read and ask for removal.

Same with an auction, they know you are bound by any terms set up in said auction when you commit to buy and if you don't read it all.........
there isn't much you can do.


Now what I would of done is send him a message before hand through ebay, click box so he has to reply through ebay [hide email] and get him to say yes you don't have to pay $600 if the auctions ends for less.

You then have proof in the ebay system of what he said and can use that.

Still, putting it in the body of the listing is pretty shady. If he wanted to get $600 out of it, he should have set a reserve of $600. Yes, people should read the fine print (which is why I skimped on a video card recently, that and they never responded to my message if it worked because it didn't say anywhere in the listing it worked or not and had no DOA warranty), but blatantly scamming people shouldn't be able to fly either.

Regardless, I was set once he sent me a bill for the exact amount of the auction for what I owed and that trumped the vague statement in the payment section which I mentioned was probably a leftover missed, when a previous template was reused. I've made that mistake before.


Anyway, he apologized for the delay and stated his job had him tied up. He actually shipped it Friday. I got the tracking number this morning.

But now, for a seller, (by experience) if you clearly state that an item is in excellant working order and you know for a FACT that the product is in good working order and when the buyer responds to the seller (once he/she receives the item) that the product is defective and not what was described and blah blah blah they want to file a dispute and/or issue a charge back with their bank. For this reason and this reason only is why I havent paid my ebay fees.

Ebay needs to protect the sellers just as much as the buyers, case end point!!

That's unfortunate for you but my focus is on legitimate complaints. There are good and bad players on both sides. It also appears you may be building the item up to much in your choice of descriptive words. "Excellent working order" is subjective and my idea of that maybe different than yours. It's better to let the buyer assume it is average and be pleasantly surprised, than to paint a picture only to fall short of their expectations.

In my case after the delay the listing turned out to be a bold face lie;
GARRETT BB 60-1 TO4 P TRIM T04 TURBO, remanufactured.

It turned out to be a T04B 98, V-trim compressor, P-trim turbine journal bearing turbo from a diesel engine.

I was suspicious of the turbo specs upon receipt. After I verified it with a call to two different manufactures, I informed the seller who indicated "I think I Googled it" for identification. He then stated that I got it at a good price compared to what it cost to get it rebuilt, further indicating his guilt because he obviously was the individual who paid to have it rebuilt in which case he would have known all along that it was not a 60-1 and certainly not a ball bearing turbo (They don't rebuild those by the way according to Turbonetics). If not why Google it when you can ask the people you paid to rebuild it.

Paypal decided in my favor and have already refunded my shipping cost, something they don't normally do, and upon proof of delivery via tracking will refund the auction price.

If you give an HONEST description and take good supporting pictures (some sellers do a lousy job of representing their merchandise) you can avoid a lot of problems as a seller. But if you hide defects, or lie about what you are selling, you're certainly asking for trouble.
When the system permits you to get paid before the buyer receives your item the greatest risk is against them. The buyer did not pay to ship the item and he did not pay to have it returned so technically he has not lost a thing.

Hopefully the brand new Garrett T66 I just won is all of what the seller says it is or I'll have to hang up my Ebay dealing.

Google is the root for all evil lol. Im glad you got that straightened out though and it seems now you directed your money toward what you actually wanted.
