  • FWD - Dyno or Track?

With factoring in costs, travel time, streetableness (you like that word dontcha?) [IE: Loud exhaust, safety, tires, traction] of vehicle....

If it came down to one option and one shot at doing it, what would you rather do {What would mean more to you} ?
Would you rather have your FWD vehicle dyno'd?
    OR
Would you rather take your FWD vehicle to the dragstrip?

    Explain your answer.

Dyno - Would rather know the available power than how fast it can go. You can usually get a good feel of how fast a car is by just driving it, but it is hard to judge the actual power of the engine that way.

Neither. It seems that I'm disappointed with the results from either one.

Track, it's more fun and cheaper.

Dyno's are just tuning tools, tracks are where you can actually use the power. Plus there is usually chicks at the track, not so for a dyno shop.

HAHAHA What kinda rational is that!

All seriousness, you are right in some cases. Unlike SOME PEOPLE, I actually have a 120 mile round trip to the nearest drag strip.
Figure about some rough mathematics; $6 a gallon for fuel, 15 mpg at best HWY + spent fuel at track roughly $60.00, paying for a second vehicle that is able to tow just in case (truck 15 mpg at best $2.50 a gallon [$20 bucks] ) , then a helmet rental or buy or borrow (minimum $15.00) , then being able to pass safety (no cracked wind screen, proper shields, kill switches etc etc) then admission to the strip ($30.00) .

$125.00 atleast for me to go to the drag strip.
          OR
For a 2 hour dyno session with logging/print out and only have to drive 20 miles round trip.
$150.00 and dont need to worry about breaking down out in BFE.

            TRACK FTW!!

Dynos are just a placebo for the real thing. Sort of like an inflatable girlfriend.

And what's all this extra vehicle crap?

Build it right and drive it there. I've never been stranded no matter where I have gone.

And if you can't pass a simple tech inspection then FIX THE DAMN THING!

Lets say a part is defective. You will not know until it's shattering down the 1/4 or cutting off on the way to/from destination.

Sometimes fixing something is not that easy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!

Hell, it is legal for the street, but it cannot pass tech at the strip. I say that is malarkey! I think they pick on FWD cars for just being FWD sometimes.

In a perfect world, yes these tidbits should be none existent, BUT the regulations are there to be enforced at the track b/c they (the officials at the track) have experienced (or should know) the repercussions of the faulty equipment. Although, sometimes, the little flaws are not really in the way to cause harm and are just influenced by rivalry differences to cause more conflict.

the guy that does tech inspections at my local track (25 minutes away ) remembers me and usually just checks my helmet. He's checked my battery a few times but they go really easy on FWD cars around here.. unless you drive a clunker, lol.

You officially suck! 25 minutes? Seriously? damnz.

There's a gray line for things I see going to the track. You either have a clunker or a sleeper..... Most of the time they are clunkers on donkers.. Which is sad, very sad.

103 Miles to my nearest dragway (2hr 15min).... so for now I'll stick to the 15-20 min trip to the Dyno to see what I get next year.

Then maybe my 1 or 2 trips to the strip will produce better results since it will have a better tune and I wont be guessing....

                      Think about it that way

My car gets inspected once a year by IHRA in the spring and I am issued an annual tech sticker.

It's subject to random inspections, (usually two or three times a season) but I don't have to go through tech on a weekly basis at any of the three tracks within an hour of me.

You don't go to street nights or test and tunes with a dialy driver, Your doing a weekly race with a registered weekly running car... Different story.

                            You're right!

Except for B'Fest nonsense, and the odd special event, I'm not beating on my car if there is no $$$ to win.

                            And I voted, LOL!

Drag race for sure. Even if you can't drive, or hookup you get a good idea of the HP via the trap speed. This weekend I ran CSCS and it was raining lightly, I knew it wasa going to be bad, so I didn't even heat up the slicks, I got a 3.1 sixty foot and ran 15.1 @ 117 MPH. It was a pretty funny run.

My car gets trailerd to the track, but the track is 500 miles from my house, and i usually make a weekend out of racing so I bring my truck for extra room for camping stuff, BBQ, ect.
