  • thinking of getting a 3rd gen F

well i have a naighbor that is selling a 86 camaro berlinetta for $800. i am seriusly thinking of buying it for my planned 3500 swap. car is fairly solid. the rear quarters are nice no rust or bondo the paint is shot though. has T-tops that do not leak (shocking i know lol) cars black-ish gray primer yellow plastic.

just woundering what else i should look at? the last 3rd gen i had was a '85 IROC-Z rust bucket with a 305 4bbl and a 5 speed so info would be nice

here is a google pic of the front end it has and rims (i think it even has some of the pin stripe left as well)

    had a 85 IROC with TPI305/700r-4 w/t-tops...

i'd say for the money. you're getting a good car, at least if you haven't found anything else wrong other than what you posted...

ya the price is what made me interested. i normaly hate that front end but 800 for a T-top car thats solid heck ya and it runs it also does not have the stupid Digital dash most Berlinettas have but the analog dial guages (i really hate the digital guages the F-bodies had)

check the floor boards and both the spare tire well (passenger side) and the storage well (drivers side) for rust.

please swap a 91/92 RS/Z28 kit onto it.. those 80's kits are fugly IMO.. lol

If the t-tops don't leak now don't ever remove them.

you'll have to modify the oil pan to clear the crossmember, after the custom mounts and some other fun it should be a solid car.

i'm slowly convincing myself to get back into something RWD, FWD just has too many problems. Must.. Find.. a.. Vega... :P

A friend of mine said he had an IROC years ago that had T tops. He took them off one day and they leaked after that. He said he sprayed the seals down with armorall and heated them up with a heat gun and they swelled back up, never to leak again. Do they make mullet wigs?

I used to have a third gen too. 1982 Z28 with a 350/TH350. I liked the early Z's front bumper, and the aftermarket (I think Hawks) 5 inch spoiler thats based on stock style.

A tire shredding muscle machine it wasnt, but could turn a mean corner.

Mullet wig? after watching camaro song on youtube, you will want one...

If you do get it, find a 4cylinder camaro/firebird bumper. they are aluminum and worth the weight in gold. If you could get the weight down with a T-5, Alum bumper, alum v6, ect. You could have a real performer.

Personally the camaro is the better car than the mustang, but its Achellies is its huge arse curb weight.

sticking with the auto. better for drag racing and concistency also a manual sucks balls in traffic (i live in a busy college town lots of stop and go idiot drivers)

he still has it talked to him he is thinking of holding on to it untill i get my money in october. so far i have been the only one interested and he has had it for sale for a month now.... might talk him down to $700
