It's the early small port alt, with the external cooling fan. Like 1/4th of the blades just came off in a chunk and hit the hood... Hell if I know, cheap chinese shit. I'll get pics when I get home. I have so much crap going on and now no car.

Rev's were around 3,000 IIRC. Actually I have no idea. I was just starting to get on it when getting on an on-ramp.

Wow, that sucks! Suddenly the DOHC alternator placement doesn't seem so bad after all... Was it a replacement unit from an auto parts chain? You should do a search and see if many people have had this happen and if so, look into a class action suit. That's a bunch of crap and something that shouldn't happen from a replacement unit.

I never heard of the metal, external fan coming apart before. I had the plastic, internal fan fragment but all it took out was the rest of the alternator.

it sounds like a real bitch now but once shit cools down & its said & done with ill bet you are one of less than 30 people to have this happen & im sure that somehow entails bragging rights.

then again, cheap chinese shit is known as cheap chinese shit for a reason-ive found this out the hard way thats why i never buy cheap chinese shit internals or anything important.

if you dont mind me asking what else is going on thats so screwed up in the first place & what car was this on? do you not have the money to fix it or is it just one of those when it rains it pours scenarios (been there done that)?

Just no personal free time right now, lots of drama/etc. Don't want to pay close to 700-800 bucks to get a hood that looks as good as the rest after paint/etc. The yards around here are extremely expensive. $750 for a door, hood is probably going to be 500-600 I bet.

I barely have time to do some simple mods right now, now I gotta deal with this. It's going to cost me money in paint and having someone paint it. I can do the prep work, etc. I will be extremely lucky if a yard has an Aqua hood, and even more lucky if it's not beat all to hell or chipping paint. It's just a matter of time, the yards are close when I get off work. I have no truck to pick up a hood, no time to prep it. Ugh.

The hood on there now is from an 87 that had peeling paint. I stripped it to bare metal and did a lot of prep work. It was PERFECT. Flat and perfect. The only thing wrong is the prop rod doesn't fit right since they changed those in the later years. I just don't need this right now. I have enough on my plate and I gain nothing from this, just loose money and time to FIX something cause of a stupid alt going out... WTF.

It looks like the center was broke for a while, as there was dirt there. Then one end came loose, flung out and the other tore off.
I'll get pics of the hood tomorrow. I took this real quick before my ride to the parts store. It's dark now and I've gotta run.

Spoke with the parts store, they told me to get an estimate at this one place. The manager will be back Tuesday for me to give him the estimate.

Damn, thats a first. I've seen those cheap ass flex fans send blades into fenders and hoods but never the alt fan.

We'll see..... They specifically said it's an old car and not to take it to a place that is expensive... I don't get that though, who cares if it's not a 2009, it's not like there is paint falling off the whole car...then I could see the point... They did say I had done a ton of business with them over the years so that's cool.

I said if they can't fix me up maybe they could work out where they give me the paint for free there and I just fix it and get someone to spray it..
