  • quad 4 vs ecotec-do they compare?

just of curiosity, id like to see what your opinions are of these engines im comparison. this isnt for a project, im just curious now after all the bragging about the quad 4.

how does the early 90's 180hp stock quad 4 stack up to a 2.2 ecotec used in the 04's (if these much difference between ecotecs)-if things like bigger tb, minor porting/portmatching, headers, a good tune, & a high flowing exhaust.

with just these modifications, how do you guys think these engines stack up, is the ecotec a contender or is that 40hp stock difference going to leave it a good deal behind, even though both engines would be pretty decently opened up & tuned/allowed to breathe.

    what do you guys think?

i'm envious of the 08-up cobalt SS with a 260HP Turbo EcoTec... 2.0L i believe and there is also a "performance pack" from the dealer that allows for more boost and pumps it up to 290HP...

if i had to get a compact FWD car, there it is...

I like the Cobalt SS, but if I had my choice for free, it would be an AWD Jetta FTW.

I prefer the quad 4 (2.3L) . It just shines past 4,500 rpm's and when modded right, can be really fast N/A. Spend some coin going FI, it'll blow your mind. I think there are a few turbo quads and each one is over 300hp iirc. The one SC quad out there is more than likely over 300 hp too. All cars are daily drivers or atleast very streetable.

GM has built an Ecotec up to 1200hp, and provided a manual with all the PNs on how to do it. Nuff said...

                i don't suppose they offer a warranty?

1200hp with any amount of cylinders is bad-ass in my book.

The Ecotec is way better. And there is no water pump problems like the Q4.

In stock form the Ecotec makes less power because it was restricted by harsher OBDII emissions and it was dropped into an Econo Car. But the foundation is there fur a far more powerful motor. RPM potential is simply a matter of camshaft selection.

quad 4 (180HP) vs the 2.4 ecotec ( 177HP) the Quad 4 is more powerfull. but the engine got a lot of reliability issues. I had one before and I actually prefer the 3x00 series then the Quad 4 for the fact that I dont have to break in my engine very years.

i was going to say-isnt the ecotec like a detuned WAY updated version of the quad 4 made for emissions? if you dont have emissions in your area & open both engines up-is the extra .2l enough to make the ecotec compare to the quad 4?

Yeah, it used to be available, but has since been taken down. I think I still have it at home as well, but I'd have to dig through some folders to find it. And of course, I'm not at home right now to do so...
