  • Lightning and Water Wells

As if anything couldnt couldnt get worse this happens and it is SO unlucky!!! About a month ago we had some terrible storms roll through the area and in one of these storms lightning struck right in our front yard. Everything seemed good until the next day when we turned on our kitchen faucet, nothing but dirty water so we thought what the heck? We didnt know at the time that lightning was the key factor to this. So about a month passes by and the water quality seemed to be getting better and we even spent the money and bought a sand filter....... we are good right? WRONG!!! Last sunday we got up and low and behold no water!!! So, we had a new regulator and installed that thinking that was the problem....no change, then we noticed the pump would come on but it was just vibrating meaning it was locked up so we were gonna pull the pump right....wrong again!!! The pump WILL NOT come up!!! (Its 95ft in the ground by the way) A professional well driller came out and said a well indeed can "collapse" by a lightning strike. See a well is formed by drilling and using compressed water to form a cavern in the water table and the apparent lightning strike caused this cavern to collapse.

So by the power of mother nature we have to pay 3250.00 bucks to dig a whole new well!!! Man this sucks! So now we have to wait on the "lovely and timely" insurance company to process this claim and it will probably take a month or longer for them to come through.

Looks like a rough few weeks are ahead of me.........

most insurance companies will classify this as "act of God" and most insurance companies don't cover the "acts of his holiness"

    no joke...

^^ not in the case of homeowners. Lightning is covered, and if you hit an animal with your vehicle *cough* it's usually covered even if you don't have full coverage.

My construction company's primary income is homeownser's insurance

Only if you keep liability only insurance. This is covered under I think comprehensive (per car related insurance).

Well we still dont have any water......we are waiting on a reputable well driller to come out to the house and write up an estimate of the total cost so it can be faxed to the insurance company(1wk) then the insurance company has to evaluate the issue and cut a check(2wks) and then the well driller can come out and drill our hole which could take up to 2 wks due to their "wait time" so all in all its going to be about a month before we get some fresh water.

Oh and another note I also have a shop right next to the pump and come to find out everything in the shop is fried. Luckily the only things that were plugged up was the brand new 30 dollar radio i just bought and a shop light. I am SO glad that the 350 dollar air compressor wasnt plugged up!! So at this point we are pretty sure that lightning actually struck the shed although there is no visible damage to be seen anywhere.

So, what have we learned class??? Lightning mixed with sheds and wells DO NOT MIX. What shall the next lesson be??
