My Ranger sounds like butt in a pipe after gutting the cat. My 92, not so bad, but it's got an aftermarket mandrel bent exhaust with a resonator in it to keep the raspy-ness down. If you have any raspy or droning sound, gutting the cat is going to make it worse. Besides, the only real reason to gut it is if it's clogged as a temp solution until you can get a new high flow one.

With a straight pipe through your cat your car will also become obnoxiously loud... You will be surprised at how much a simple chamber will deaden the raspyness of an exhaust.

Yeah to give you an idea, this is my car with a cat and edelbrock muffler
And this is the same exhaust with the cat removed and a full straight pipe in its spot... I put the cat back in shortly after...
Yes it does sound rather cool, but the Po Po's around here will pull my ass over SO quick for that... and it doesn't help that my tint is 5% all around... FAR from legal for this area.
I did a flange and ball joint fitting on the cat section since it also has the 3" dump on it, so if I want I can remove that and put in just a cat section alone, but I had just a straight pipe so I tested it to see how much louder it made it.

I know theres quite a bit headers for most of the cars on here... but im having a real hard time finding a set for 6th gen Monte 3.4l... Id like to slowly redo my who exhaust as i dont have a crap load of cash to just dump on it... and starting at the front, working my way back, seems to make the most sense?

And yeah the tone didn't change much but was extremely louder... and droned like a bastard while driving... hell I hit 3k rpm at 75 on the higway (3.69 fdr)... droning is not what I want... LOL

robertisaar : I agree!! I like my UltraFlo Stainless. Straight through, no drone, just rumble!
I can't help but think that chambered mufflers rob a lot of power with the turbulence that has to be created inside. I noticed a power increase just removing the resonator, and it is just one chamber... Maybe I have a sensitive butt-dyno? lol I mean we want as little kinks, turns, flattened pipes in our piping, why would we add it back in with a muffler?sigpicNew 2010 project (click image)
