  • Simple custom antitheft device?

What would be the best way to wire up a momentary switch that had to be presed while starting the car? It would need to directly control the starter so it wouldn't be vunerable to getting disabled by a theif bypassing passlock.

It's one thing if someone breaks in for my cheap radio, but taking the car would be much worse.

toggle switch for the IGN1 fuse? i believe its a 60amp fuse, so get an appropiate switch. what i did was hide a toggle switch in my trunk for the fuel pump. good luck stealing something that will crank but not fire...

I saw one car wired up in that you'd have to press and hold "RES/ACCEL" on the cruise control stalk for the starter circuit to work. It was wired up to a relatively simple relay. Noone's gonna guess that!!

if only it were that easy. me being the very paranoid person that i am, there are 3 other fail-safe systems on that car that would prevent it from being stolen. don't expect me to only have one way of keeping anything safe. and you forgot fender too, that probably got the worst of the damage

This is under the hood correct? Would making a run from there to the drivers seat and back create too much loss on the line? It sounds like IGN1 would be used for more than just starting as well? I want something I have to depress to make it turn over, not something I have to switch to make it run then switch back off when I park.

If anyone has any writeups on the cruise control button method (or something similar) please let me know.

                That's what makes relays beautiful.

Yeah the coil to the relay requires just a few hundred milliamp, so it doesn't need much juice to fire. The relay does the real work of the high current switching.

And you would do this right there at the source, not run 6 feet of wire into the cabin in each direction. I think he meant about the extra cabling having too much voltage drop which would affect everything on this circuit, which a relay would eliminate.
