Quick DOHC question

I want to get a DOHC windage tray to put on my 3.1L build for my Trooper. If I go to the yard to pull the pan will there be anything in the way like cross members or braces that I wont be able to remove? Having to pull the engine just for the windage tray will be a serious pain in the ass.

Also Besides the Lumina and Grand Prix what other cars had the engine?

Ok there are about 9 3.4L cars at the junkyard, according to the website. So is it possible to drop the pan without pulling the motor? I know when I worked on my friends Cavalier with a 3.1L it was very easy to get at the pan. Are all the older cars similar in that respect??

I don't think you have room to drop the oil pan with the engine on the subframe.

Thats correct!

You can't even lower it enough to change the pan gasket.

drop the sub-frame or pull the motor.....

Ok I can drop the sub frame thats just bolts. Hopefully they are not seized in there.

I don't want to read "oh, I've seen them, blah, blah, blah" I don't care if you've seen them, I need the VIN from one LS and one LTZ that is a 1997 and is a WL52X or WN52X car.

Well I got the tray. When I got there I looked and went ahh shit. The car was too low on the stands to really work under and there was no way to keep the engine up if I pulled the sub frame. But after looking at it for a bit we devised a plan. The yard supplies large chain fall hoists that are easy to wheel around. So we grabbed one and brought it over and hooked it to the rad support. Then I un bolted the struts and 4 subframe bolts and we lifted the nose of the car straight up and let the engine and subframe sit on the ground cutting anything that was hanging up. Then we used the chain fall again to flip the engine over and we then pulled the sub frame off by removing a few nuts. Then after the starter was off we had access to all the bolts on the pan. I quickly removed that and then the windage tray and took the 7 main cap bolts to go with it. I grabbed that and a plastic part for my trooper and both things only cost me $10 !!!!

There is an awesome yard like what it sounds like you have there about 45 minutes from me in Three Rivers Michigan. They have those types of hoists there, wheel barrels with 2 old spares for tires to bring your goodies to the front, and all of the vehicles are up on jack stands made from welding 2 old steel rims together in an upside down "T" shape. Best of all, I got a front knuckle and spare tire carrier bracket for my truck for $11.80 after my wheel bearings let loose on the highway. They also have about 3-4 feet between the cars and it's the best organized place I've ever seen. Anyone around me interested, it's Eagle Auto Parts.

Yea ours is called Pick-A-Part. They actually run the place right. It is a grab it while you can kind of place with no stupid pricing and they rotate vehicles like mad. There is always fresh stuff there. They don't hold on to skeletons for years hoping to cash in big.
