  • Need to upgrade my existing Alpine head unit

I bought the Alpine in 1989 or 1990 when it first came out but now with technology so advanced I'm thinking of upgrading it with something recent.

Having capability to play MP3 is a must but I also want something that has practically no distortion with rca outputs.

    HOLY SCHITT!!!!!

I haven't seen one of those in well, almost 18 years!!!

There are plenty of head units out there with your requirements, about 95% of available units on the market currently.

You'll need to narrow the selection down by figuring out what other features you need/want as well. Like Pre-outs? How many and what voltage? Fold down/flap face? Any other features that you may want or need.

I strongly suggest going with a Pioneer deck. I have one in both cars, and in my opinion, BEST sounding and most easy to use deck out there.

I agree with DrewZ28. I have a Pioneer unit in my 1990 Grand Prix STE, and I LOVE it.

H/U still looks good , what shape are your Orion hcca amps .i would like to see some pic's of the amps.
About the upgrade , are you into SQ , because there's not a lot of hi-end units that are new models. There are a few that can fill your needs at different price range ,but if you are in a budget i recomend the kenwood kdcx592
At the usac forum we were trying to find Budget sq. head units and this was brought up and this what someone had to say
" Kenwood KDCX592. Single din, high voltage output w/ low impedance, cool display, 24 bit dac, Non-flip face (for ease of custom installation), quiet transport, and cheap as h e l l! you can get one at ful retail for like 150.00. If you want a great SQ deck that is a current model, you can not go wrong."

well everything is still working fine and in very good condition. Bought them new and installed them once. A few years back I removed four of the five red orion amps when i removed the spare battery in the trunk with the orion mbr-70.
              yes i need SQ.

My old SQ setup in my Beretta consisted of 1" DynAudio tweeters and 4" Focal mids in the kick panels, 7" DynAudio midbasses in the front floorboard and 2-8" Kicker Solobaric subs mounted in the rear sidepanels. I had a Sony in dash CD player (along with a 6 disc changer in the glove box and 10 disc changer in the center console). Also had an AudioControl Three.1 in the dash and EQL in the rear seat. An Orion 225HCCA drove the subs and an Orion 275XTR drove the front stage, via a custom built passive crossover network. The amps were mounted up under the rear deck, and visible through the (enlarged) existing speaker cutouts, concealed by a custom rear desk of course. The entire car looked stock and retained about 95% of the trunk space (the amprack dropped down 4" across the entire deck, so that's where the 5% went). It sounded awesome, but I never really got much chances to compete with it. All my competition was back in the early 90s with my old Chevelle. The same 225HCCA ran a 10 speaker, full range setup (including center channel) through a massive, custom passive crossover network.

If you are wanting SQ, concentrate on your front stage, with minimal speakers, and only have a couple of subs in the rear.

I agree if you into sq. you need to concentrate in the front stage . speaker placement is very important , i notice that you have speakers all over the car .That is a waste of power .
you should be able to get a very nice sounding car with the equipment you have .

i would still like to se pics of your orion amps and a list of models.

sure will take some pics of them once i dig them out of the closet.
I went with Orion XTR IB drivers so to keep the trunk space without a box.
