  • Piston Pin Question?

Are piston pins offset to either the thrust side or non thrust side of a cylinder? I had a quiz at school and I answered that they were perfectally centered and got it wrong. I think the quiz is just fucked up. Because alot of them are. According to our quizes the sun is the source of ALL energy

It is......For the most part...The earth creats some as well...any body has energy...

I know there is an offset but can't remember what side.....Application specific..

No the sun is not in any way the source of all energy. It was a true or false question. Energy comes from the gravitational energy of the moon (like tides) and other planets. Energy comes from within the earth (geothermal) from gravity of our own planet (that is how hydo dams work) and from neuclear sources.

Why would there be an offset? If there was you would have to ensure the pistons were not 180* off when you put an engine together. And as far as I know it does not matter. I have never seen any indicator marks

has to do with keeping the thrust loads down a bit or something...

and you DO have to put pistons in depending on the markings. its pretty much that way for all engines. 60degreev6's do have a (this side points towards: type piston)

Never noticed it with my 3.4L All I know is I put it back together the same way it came apart. I marked it with a punch. Is there a page out there wil measurements of their pistons?

The 660 pistons have a pin offset of only 0.100" or so. This is small enough you wouldn't notice it unless you look closely at the pistons. If you look at the engine from the front, with the crank spinning clockwise, the pins are offset to the right. This affects the rod angularity during the power stroke, putting the rod closer to perpendicular to the crank. This puts less side load on the pistons, and more thrust load on the crank.

humm.. never knew that about the pistons... but you are very correct about the sun not being the only source of energy.....

Ok so they are offset to the thrust side then?
I know the sun is not the only source of energy. The whole class went mental man we were so pissed that the school would allow such a dumb ass question like that pass.
