  • Massachusetts Emissions program

Is coming to an end this year well to a point
96 and newer only ie OBD2 testing

    see>
    COMMONWEALTH OF MASSACHUSETTS
MOTOR VEHICLE INSPECTION AND MAINTENANCE PROGRAM

    October 24, 2006
    Dear Interested Party:
The Commonwealth’s Enhanced Emissions & Safety Test contract with Applus+ Technologies expires in two years, on September 30, 2008, and the Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) and Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) are actively planning for the future. MassDEP and RMV held six public meetings during August to receive comments and feedback from interested parties. Based upon the comments and feedback received at the public meetings, the agencies
have begun fine-tuning the working assumptions for the next program and are preparing to draft a Request for Response (RFR). The agencies intend to issue the RFR next spring, and hope to have a contractor selected and in place to begin the transition to the new program no later than early 2008.
The working assumptions for the next contract include:
    • Continuation of a combined, decentralized safety and emissions inspection to ensure vehicle safety and clean air, as well as convenience for motorists.

Elimination of tailpipe testing of gasoline-powered vehicles by exclusively relying on annual onboard diagnostic (OBD) emissions testing, since the vast majority of vehicles in the Massachusetts fleet are OBD-equipped.(1996 and up)

there is more if you like to read let me know

i like how they do the OBD-II cars, that whole dyno thing to measure the levels was annoying when i had the beretta, a pain in the ass to say the least.

now with the grand am its just a plug and go deal since its OBD-II.
wonder how they will do it with my subaru its a weird car while its a 95 its also OBD-II

there's still too many shitboxes running around out there today. for example when i went to walmart today there was this POS ford taurus with rot holes all over the place and the back bumper being held on by a bungee cord.

ive never had a problem with the whole gas cap thing, they seem to never check mine but everyone i know has problems with there gas caps when they go.

the ones with the shitboxes prob pay the guy off or is his best friend or something. cause that taurus i saw the other day shouldnt be on the road, it had rot holes at every corner under the doors and fenders and rockers too. not to mention the bungee cord holding the bumper on.

when i bought my Beretta Z26 like 4 years ago i went to this place in worcester and intially it failed for emissions so i took it back to where i bought it they supposedly fixed it and it passed that. but when i got home im going through the car making sure things are cool for me to drive it and most of the lights were burnt out including the side markers, fog lights, and the backup lights would only work with the sifter in a certain spot.
so yeah with those lights not working my car shouldnt have passed, and the tires were pretty shitty too along with the muffler hanging down low.
btw this is larry's inspection on main st in worcester by the airport.
now i go to a place in east brookfield which is pretty good and my cars always check out good.

kinda sucks for all the shops that had to retrofit there stations with all the new fancy equipment unless they got reimbursed by the state.

it says the car will be denied... in short

the subaru came from the factory that way so they cant do shit. now if i still had the Beretta Z26 that i was OBD-II swapping then they could tell me to get out.

just got my sticker this past friday for the subaru which would normally require the tailpipe test but didnt get it, all they did was a safety thing and they didnt even pop the hood.

when the guy was done i asked him "what they dont do emissions anymore" and he said they changed it august 1st, and were totally changing the whole program.

just kinda caught me off guard since i though this had another month of testing left, so anyone with a pre 96 car wont have to deal with the tailpipe crap anymore.
