Ok, I saw this thrifty guy on the youtube that put an old late eightees volkwagon turbo diesel engine in his (formerly) gas-powered minivan.
He then claimed it now got whatever those little volkwagon diesel engines used to get in the eightees in those little cars, around 50-60+ mpg??
Of all the expensive homemade ways (including homemade electric cars) I've heard to get higher mpgs or use less gas outta a regular vehicle, this one makes the most sense in terms of economics that I've seen and the most pragmatic in terms that most enthusiasts/DIYs could install a diesel engine rather than worry with other crap, like batteries and electric motors for example.
Only problem is, all those little turbo diesel engines are long gone or expensive (I've seen them for 2-3 grand online).
What readily available/alternative diesel engines could be put in a regular vehicle chassis that get that good mileage. Anyone got any suggestions?
Of course, I guess this is a no-go in State like California.
