Apparently not all tires are created equal. Some have greater rolling resistance than others. How can I buy tires that won't decrease fuel efficiency. What to look for, or just cruise horror stories on the internet?

I would worry more about proper tire inflation and wheel alignment. If you want to get picky though you can look at tire weight.

More surface area contacting the road = more resistance.

Thus wider tires are not going to be your best bet for mileage.
It would be fun to put 4 spares on a car and drive around for a week and see what the effects on gas mileage are.

Friend had a geo metro.. the spare was bigger than the actual tires o.O

Tire wise, yeah, inflation and alignment are most important. When it comes to resistances, yeah, some grip the road better than others. So don't buy super aggressive street racing tires, or drive around with snow tires on. But I don't think the extra grip will really affect fuel economy as much as a tire being under inflated.

Yeah, the 185/65-14 tires on my Saturn are probably a contributor to its 40mpg highway. Then again, they're also a contributor to its lack of grip. Can't win for losing.

Michelin likes to say that their tires have fuel economy enhancing benefits. GREEN X is something they like to stamp on thier tires when they have that characteristic.
