  • For all the Fiero people.....

I've found a 1988 Fiero GT, white, gray interior, 2.8, auto. My questions are: What are some of the typical problems with the car? It has 100,000 miles on it. How hard is a manual conversion? What would I use? How much harder is a 3.4 TDC to put in than a 3400? The car is all original, going to see it this weekend. Anyway...... lemme know something! Later!

I've heard that the 3.4L DOHC is one of the easiest swaps to do physically. Only one motor mount needs to be changed. No matter what motor you put in there though, you are going to have to wire it up. I think a 3.4L DOHC/284 combo in a Fiero GT would be a KILLER setup!

Under hood fires are a very common problem if the car has been left with leaky valve covers.

Man, I hate having to explain this.

The engine fires were a result of the 2.5 4-cyl engine leaking oil out of the valve cover, plus the engine had oiling problems that would cause the engine to trow a rod, and dumping oil on the converter. The cars are actually designed way ahead of thier time.

The 88's did have a superior suspension, and the manual conversion isn't hard at all, just get the cv shafts from the donor car.

The 88 does not have the suspension problems of previous years, only problems you will see are things that would happen to any 15yr old car... stuff will need to be replaced.
              I modify stuff
