I have a stupid question but what would using sand as the media look like? I have a siphon blaster that I've been thinking about using to clean my UIM with.
Looks like sand . That's why people call it a sandblaster - don't ever use real sand, though. I get mine from Southern Tool, it's an industrial supply store (you more than likely have a MSC, they are in most towns).
I have bought some black silica sand from Menards before. It was called Black Magnum, I believe? Ran around $5 for a 25 lbs. bag IIRC, and has a small opening with a flap in it to keep the sand in the bag, yet let you stick the siphon tube in it. I have a siphon tube type blaster too.

I have a cabinet, just dump it in there after vacuuming out the old stuff...

Well aren't you Mr. Fancy pants! :P j/k, lol. I want a cabinet, but for now my siphon feed works. Ideally I want a clamshell style, but right now I can't swing it. My post about the sand and the bag of it was pointed more towards Scott, but can apply to anyone since I thought that sand was really good. I don't know what grade it was, but it cleaned surfaces up really really nice. I think it was probably a little too coarse for critical gasket surfaces like the head gasket mating surface though. Worked out really well for things like intake passages and cleaning heads in general, though.

Yes , what I was wondering is what would the manifold surface look like if I used sand as the media rather than glass bead? Why shouldn't sand itself be used? I have a bucket of it sitting here now and a LIM and UIM that could use some attention.
The cabinet is not fancy, it uses the same siphon gun you have . Mine is actually very similar to the Harbor Freight cabinet, but mine is 1" thick plastic instead of metal.
Sand will just disintegrate and turn to dust. I had someone tell me they could use sand, so I brought a bag of play sand from Home Depot to the shop, and laughed my butt off at the conditions following.
