  • What do you hate about the 60 Degree V6?

Yea I know I know we all love them to death but there must be some things pissing you off about them. So taking a hint from the thread on how you got one lets hear what would make you get rid of them LOL

One thing I don't like is GM genius idea to put the filter mount right beside the engine mount which is a rear wheel drive only problem I think. But it makes it impossible to mount a filter without an adapter and then if you want to get fancy and put in a remote filter you really need to get creative. Its not a simple install like a Small Block. It takes a fancy adapter, that I have only found at Canton Racing, and modifications to the engine mount. But I think the problem stems from the fact it was a FWD motor first and then the bosses were added after for RWD mounts.

I hate how the lower intake meets the valve covers. I also hate gen2 pcv setup and the stock location of the ignition module and coils.
Fixed the one stuck with the other.

Yeah, the whole intake-manifold-gasket-may-destroy-your-engine thing isn't too cool.

I suppose every engine has it's quirks. This is the first engine I'm really starting to know the inner workings of.

The 2.8L iron-head engine just plain ain't powerful enough to be hauling an SUV around, but I'm grateful there are upgrade options.

No external oil passage in a good spot for a dry sump system...
Too many oil return holes in the lifter galley causing windage....
No oil return low in the block for turbos or accumulator's....
          No 4 blot main option....
No welch plugs in the side of block...
No cross drilled factory cranks ....
No "wall oiling" option on factory rods ....

Non adjustable valvetrain, stock aluminum heads...
          The stock gen3 roller cams/ chains ...

          Did I forget anything?

Sounds like someone needs an L67 swap.

                  Gen3's
i hate GM for changing the mount boss depth for the rear and front mounts on the 3500 VS the 3400... the rear ones cost me a diff and jackshaft, the front ones make my engine sit slightly crooked. The secondary coolant line setup sucks balls on the gen3's as well, if you choose to block it off the engine won't burp. stock timing chains, the stock cam

                  Gen 2's:
the coil pack location sucks, OPSU replacement on the 2.8 is terrible.. PCV sucks, spark plugs on the rear side sucks (in a cavalier atleast), CTS is a pain in the ass, the water neck cracks too easy. the sad excuse for a cam ("H.O."?? wtf it's like .409 lift)

                  Gen1's:
                  the iron top end

GEN3: Lower Intake Gaskets(Now rectifed by FelPro), oil pump drive seal(on early models)

3.4 TDC: Lack of full timing chain, Alternator location, Non use of a roller valvetrain, convoluted upper intake manifold, non keyed and marked timing sprockets, early DIS mounting, oil pan gasket, intermediate shaft rear block cap gasket, rear sparkplug acess, oil pump drive seal.

GEN2-1: Non use of roller valvetrain, oiling system, early GEN 2 block bosses(AC and mounting), Oil pan gasket, camshaft rear block cap gasket, Low initial horsepower(though good for the 80's and early 90's), no windage tray, pre '91 wiring, oil pump drive seal.

These are things that I noticed that could be improved. Whether or not I hate them is another story.

Oh yea I forgot about the distributor O-Ring. That baby was causing my Trooper to loose a quart of oil a day!!. But lucky it was only a few bucks and not too hard of a job. The original owner tried the old "lift and RTV Silicone fix" obviously it never worked.

Only thing I don't like is the LIMG issues, but now that I've learned to do them, and there are metal gaskets out there, it's a non-issue for me. Other than that I can't complain, mine is still running great, has a lot of abuse and miles on it. I get good mileage and power. I don't think I will stray unless I go V8.
