Honestly can't have one without the other. You need both.

wrong answer. I don't mean marketing research, im talking product research. You can certainly advertise without researching a product.

What he said. Does not matter how good you market something if it SUCKS, and does not matter how much research you do, it will not sell if you don't market it right.

Try marketing 60V6 adjustable fuel pressure regulators to the ford guys. Does not go well. That is when both marketing and research fails you.

Just so you know, I AM talking about product research. If you don't research something, how can you answer any proposed questions about it?

Will this work in my car?
It is an adjustable fuel pressure regulator.
          how do you adjust it?
          with a screwdriver.
I mean how do you adjust it for your car?
you have to use a screwdriver.

Get what I am saying? If you don't research something, and you don't know crap about it, how do you expect to sell it? Even still, even if you know everything there is to know about it, if don't market it right, sales will flop. I still say you can't have one without the other.

i agree, with the first several replies, when looking at a proper product.

But, in general, marketing is by far more important. I mean, hell..... they're still selling "Tornados" and "Electric Super/turbochargers". That's some damn good marketing, for selling a hair dryer and some fancy bent up scrap aluminum for rediculous prices :P

^^^ You beat me to the punch :P
                  I voted marketing.

You can sell a crappy product if your presentation is good, but you can not sell a good product with bad presentation.

Unfortuanely, Ben, you are on the right track, but it's going to take a little longer for people to catch on to the progress made with all your research. Sometimes you need to pimp yourself let people know why you are the best.

I already know what I need to do. I was just curious what people thought. Has nothing to do with MMS or any other company. There are examples for everything when it comes to business.

Research is critical. You can sell a good product without marketing. Word of mouth is the best marketing tool ever. Get the word out to the right crowd, and the product in the right peoples' hands, and you won't need to market or advertise.

If you are talking about the 60V6 world, then sadly, I'd have to say it is all about marketing. There are some many people out there that want products that they see in "tuner" magazines, because it makes the imports go faster. If you market said products, even without any research, there will be many people that will be interested. You can spout out all kinds of research info to these same people, and it may not mean crap to them. If you start talking about head porting and how you adjusted the port ceiling and short side radius to improve velocity through the port, 75% of people out there will have no clue what you are talking about. BUT, if you list the porting as a street/strip setup, people would attribute that to a higher performance part than just a street setup.

Is that what you were looking for...?

If you want to be a honest business with a good rep. then you'll need to put research first. If all you want is the almighty dollar, then put marketing first. Just know, sometimes putting marketing first will get you your quick buck now, but the business may not last as long as you could of had it last.
