  • 1995 American Car Owners... I have a question

Does your car have Day Time Running lights and a Third Brake Light? I need to know since my girlfriend is buying her aunts car who lives in the states. In order to insure it in Canada the car must have the above safety features.

And if anyone knows some more info about importing cars that would be much appriciated.

all american cars had to have a 3rd brake light from 86-up(pickup trucks not included)

most(if any) american cars in 95 did not have DRL's, and i think most dont even have them today.

I know that 1998 GM cars have DRLs. Both my dad's Blazer and my mom's Lumina have that feature. But I know that it was an unknown feature here in 1993.

My 95 Beretta has DRL's if that helps. I've read that the switch to drl's was made in mid 95 for the beretta's, but I don't know about other gm vehicles.

GM is pretty much the only company who has put on DRLs on their cars, mainly because they came up with the concept (IIRC). I'm pretty sure it started around 94-96, depending on the model.

To add DRLs is fairly easy, you can get the kit from GM which has the DRLs and Twilight Sentinel

Man you guys are way behind the times. We have had DRL's up here since the very late 80's.

Well it is good to know that it will not be hard to add.

I think the 95 Beretta's where the first GM Vehical to come standard with them. I know the 96+ N-bodys got them.

It was becoming law in the late '80s here in Ontario, to have all new vehicles equipped with DRLs, I think it was required as an absolute by '90 or '91. My '88 Z24 parts car had them, it was a module that was mounted just beside the battery, which is now installed in my '85 Jimmy, just added it a few weeks ago.

3rd brake lights were required before or around the same time. I know they were an option before DRLS though, My '87 Sunbird has a factory 3rd brake light, I had an '86 Cavalier hatchback that had a 3rd brake light, and many other vehciles from around the same time have had 3rd brake lights from then on, trucks as mentioned were the only excpetion, but now they are required.

I also believe that if any imported vehcile that has a manufacture date after these items became required and are not equipped with them, they must be added, before the registration in Canada (or at least Ontario) is final. Besides, they do provide better safety.

Yeah, third brake lights are a nice heads-up out on the interstate. Especially since so many dumbasses do something that obstructs their normal brake lights.
