  • So I got a line on a 3.8SC

    How about cramming a 3.8SC into a J body?

  • #2
Thats against this site's policy. Seriously, the L67 isn't a good match for the J body considering the effort it takes and weight. Certainly can be fast but I will never recommend it:P

I know its taboo to talk about other motors other than ours but I had to ask someone. I like to think of this crazy shit when I'm bored.

btw the guy only wants 600 for motor w/less than 30,000 miles and the ecm. Needs room before he retires out of the service. Its tempting.

It's been done, don't expect anything drastic as far as performance.. mid 13's or so. Lots of custom work.. there are MUCH better options out there.

Agreed. The L67 is it's fastest when the S/C is ditched and a turbo added. With that in mind, a l67 N/A is 200hp - the 3500 N/A is over 200, and weighs less. Add boost to that, and the fact that a 60* engine has better harmonics/RPM limit, and the point is mute. The most powerful 3800 N/A I have heard of was <250 to the wheels - Dave has over 270 to the wheels.

N/A 3800 is the L32. I have heard of using a N/A 3800 and doing work, but at about 300 HP, the block cracks. With the blown engine, once it gets over the 350 mark, you have to be careful, and it also cracks.

The 60 degree engine seems to hold up better.

Stock 3800 blocks do not crack to my understanding. There are several people over 400hp with stock bottom ends in fbodies, and two with over 600hp that I know of with forged internals.

The fastest one I know of is a twin turbo 3800II with 800+hp and runs 8's in the 1/4 mile.

Yeah, there are turbo L67 blocks in GP's at the 9.0x mark in the quarter mile. I'd estimate near 1000HP at the crank for those. Over 900, at least. Stock bottom ends on L36/L67/L32/L26 engines are incredibly strong. Nobody has broken a block due to power. The N/A 3800 (L36/L26) are hard to get power from, staying N/A, but take to boost better than just about anything I've seen, particularly from a turbo. The M90 isn't an efficient power adder, even when it is intercooled. It's the nature of the beast. There are a few L67 J-body cars running around, and they're plenty quick. There is a lot of custom work to be done. This is true no matter what you do, though, unless you go way back to the early J-body that had a 3.1 in it already.

No, it's still rediculously hard to put the 3800S/C in a second gen, wether or not it had a V6 stock. it doesnt matter, because you have to do all custom mounts to get it in there anyway.....

sort of throws the weight distribution off too (from how good it was in the first place lol).

some guys really like the idea of the swap because its factory supercharged but with a little thinking you could do the same thing with a 60* engine. or just mild turbocharge the beast stock and put out the same power.

I am (for some reason) am obligated to let you know that the fastest FWD 2nd gen is currently a 3800 turbo, he's running around an 11.1 1/4 mile. Keep in mind though, the car is completely stripped with a full cage, welded diff and LOTS of other custom work. The fastest 60v6 2nd gen is Midnightriderz24 @ a 12.2 on a stock bottom end, full street trim.

Thats a hell of a comparison there. Racecar vs. nearly stock motor with a homemade turbo setup.

I thought about the w body swap, but I just can't do it. The DOHC is such an exotic critter I like playing with it.
