Good question... but
Why? I mean will a higher output pump somehow help you turn faster/harder?
I noticed some cars have the variable assist feature that plugs into their power steering pump. If you have the wiring for it (my sedan did, I think my coupe does too) can you just add a pump with the same variable assist plug on it and get whatever that is?
I am not even sure what "variable assist steering" would do for me.SpudFiles

hariable assist power steering will give you light steering in parking lots, but the faster you go the less assist it gives, giving you more road feel in the wheel, helping it from feeling "floaty"

There is absolutely no need for a larger pump. The hydro booster is in series with your steering rack and is dormant until you hit the brakes. Even then it uses little fluid. I would however recommend adding a cooler if your car does not have one and you can also install a filter too.1993 EXT. CAB, 3.4L V6 TBI, 5spd manual. Sonoma

FYI:
For the VARIABLE ASSIST, you have to have the VARIABLE POWER STEERING PUMP, the VARIABLE POWER STEERING RACK, and the SENSOR RING that goes around the base of the steering column, as well as the VARIABLE ABS CONTROLLER.
The steering rack has a special valve in it to keep from loosing pressure suddenly (keeping it from going floaty on the road, and hard in the parking lot).
The sensor ring at the base of the steering column (have you seen the 3 wire plug near the ALDL connector under the dash? That is what it is for) is a magnetic sensor that detects how fast and hard your turning is.
The steering pump has the variable pressure sensor based on engine RPM.
All of this is controlled by the ABS computer.Taylor

do you happen to have a cooler and filter in mind or can you suggest one for my car? i have a malibu which should weigh in under 3k lbs when everything is done

I bet you the people are screwing up the return line and not having issues with the pump. The only proper way to plumb the return line for the hydro boost is to add a second port to the reservoir of the pump.
You can grab a cooler out of a second gen S-10. It is a simple cooler to mount or even modify if need be. It can be retrofitted to almost anything. You can also use any transmission cooler on the market if you want. Your parts store should be able to get you an inline power steering filter. You just plumb it inline with the return line.
