  • what was the best GM trans for the 31xx

im wondering also if the 97 3100 could have a 4t60-e mated to it.. I've heard it's an awsome trans, and i've had one with my 90 degree 3300 v6, and it was a rock... i still have a 4t60-e in my barn attatched to a 3300

4T65E is better than the 4T60E, but requires more to control it. A modified 4T65E has been mated to GM's 1200hp+ Ecotecs, and GM even has a "manual" explaining what modifications were done to achieve this.

      My 3100 has a 4T60-E stock.

Some say they suck, mine's still rocking through.

Any GM FWD trans will bolt up, even the caddilac 4t85-e or whatever it was. The 4t65-eHD is strong and weighs less than the caddy one. Both will add weight and size over the 45-e though

But a HM282 getrag is the most stout for power. Just put a strong clutch in it. 5spd ftw!

thanks bszopi... and isacc it's funny you should mention a cadi trans like that because earlier i was thinking about all the money you could dump into making a malibu fast when really it would be nice to stuff in the largest FWD GM motor mankind has seen... but i suppose there arnt many? i just stick to imagining the 32v northstar... but yeah, thats RWD, how the f*#! would that work..

4t60e's can be built with 4t65e parts.

the 4t8e does not bolt up to a small gm pattern. 3 bolts will line up, you need to modify the block to clear the case on the odd bank bottom ear. even so, the 4t80e is not a performance tranny, gm doesnt even use it in the 300hp v8 fwd grand prix, it uses a 4t65e hd

the 4t80e is also right around 300lbs. its designed for smooth soft shifting of a caddy. it is way overkill for the v6's in even a w body. also it originaly came out in 92 for the northstar, and at that point the next tranny down (the 4t60e) wouldnt take the power. the 4t65e hd now would take the power the northstar puts out, however if gm made the 4t65e hd shift like a caddy behind 310hp, it would be worn out in no time flat.
