  • Radiator Leak - 96 Olds Ciera

I have identified that the radiator has a slow leak but I cannot see where the leak is. It appears to be on the left-hand side of the radiator when facing forward, near the battery because there is coolant at the bottom of the radiator and coolant down the left end of the lower shield underneath the engine compartment.

Another observation: This morning the garage floor had about 2 sq feet of coolant on it.

It seems my radiator leaks more when cold. Could this indicate some sorf of "crack" because it makes sense that when cold the crack enlarges and therefore leaks more.

    How common is this condition?

Is it worth repairing this or just getting a new radiator? And if it is suggested I get a new radiator, should I go with OEM, or is there a good aftermarket equivalent for this (name brand please).

The other thing I want to mention is my vehicle came with Dexcool, but when I was forced to replace the ruptured lower intake gasket at 63,000mi, I flushed and have been running green Prestone coolant ever since (now at 111,000mi), and I have flushed once or twice since then too. Could the green Prestone be causing problems with the radiator?

    Thanks all.

(For those of you who read my posts on the LIM thread, I still have not ruled out LIM failure again. But I know this radiator leak is not related to the possible LIM failure).

I had a crack in a radiator at the top hose connection point. I attempted to fix and and think it only made it worse. After 2 days, I just ended up replacing the radiator instead. I just bought a replacement from O'Reilly Auto and hadn't have any problems since. This was on a 98 Blazer, 4.3L, and occurred just over 2 yrs ago.

Today I replaced the radiator with one from Advanced Auto - "Proliance Ready-Rad". Not hard at all. Took a couple hours. Thanks for your post Brad.

There was no core charge so I still have the old radiator. Are there any companies that would want it for $ or should I just dump it??
