  • My future street/strip beast

Well, buying parts for the GA is being put on the burner for a while, still going to continue doing head/manifold work as I can; but ran across a deal that was too good to pass up! I'll have to post some pictures of it maybe tomorrow, or this weekend.

Just got hold of a 1991 Chevy C1500 Sport short cab/short bed pickup with only 102000 miles, stouting a sbc TBI 350 w/ a 4-speed A/T. Exterior is in decent shape, still got the factory black although a little faded, with the orange/red pinstripes, clearcoat is peeling in some spots, but no body rust at all. Interior is that Chevy grey, still in great shape, premium factory stereo - no holes in the seats or carpets, no cracks in the dash. Headliner still defying gravity. Truck is in great shape, no fluid leaks to speak of; original owner, all maintenance work was documented; this truck was highly maintained right down to the oil change every 3k miles. Brand new BFG Radial T/A tires on it, shocks and recently new, brakes, wheel cylinders, master cylinder has all been replaced within the last year. Still running the factory R12 (still fully charged too!). She's got a full size camper shell on the bed, fiberglass that's been painted to match the truck. Some performance work was done to it: Summit hi-flow dual exhaust setup (although still running the OE manifolds), the OE EEPROM has been replaced with a performance chip, K&N air filter (that looks fairly brand new, never been cleaned before).

    1500 FRIGGIN DOLLARS!!

I just couldn't pass it up! I'm planning on this truck being my street/strip rodded truck in the distant future; just kinda playing with ideas as to what I'm wanting to do with it. I could always keep the 350, and swap out the TBI for a 4-barrel, do a sbc buildup. Or, I could drop in a 454 of that era (seeing as how the SS models ran the bbc). Or . . . I could drop in a built 454, or maybe a stroked 455 (which would be my preference) . . . or, maybe I could always go the route of swapping in a blown LQ9 or blown LS7 partnered to a 5L80 or one of the new 6 speeds . . . I've got more than enough room in this beast for any crazy combination.

So, looking to bounce some ideas here, any recommendations for future plans with it?

lol boosted LS7 would be crazy. I'd go for a nice LSx motor with some boost.

that's kinda what I'm leanin towards, and yeah, an LS7 would be friggin sick, and for a complete sutom setup like that, it's not that hard to run and route the newer electronics. But, most defi I'd thrown a fat blower on it, maybe a nice squeeze of some goose-juice . . .

All's I know is that the suspension is going to be re-done front-ta-back. I know a guy that does custom cage, frame and suspension work; I'll prob look into having a re-enforced frame fabbed up, have a nice 4-point tucked into the cab, and figure something for the bed.

More than likely while I got th motor, tranny and everything else out, I'll have the body striped down and pieced out for a custom paint job, including the body itself . . . right now, I'm thinkin Mother of Pearl would look beautiful on this truck - but that paint mix is ridiculously expensive

She's going to be a long, slow, drawn-out project for sure, but this truck's gonna roll when she's done.

Drop it a little bit too. Lowered would look nice.

meh. to a point. That Slammed look is a bit ridiculous for a truck, IMO. If I do any lowering, it will prob only be to the rear to even the ride instead of having that ass-high stance all stock trucks do.

I won't really need to do any lowering to the front - dropping an LS7 and a 5-speed A/T is enough weight to lower the front as it is

2/3 drop looks OK on them and thats about as low as i would go.

my old 90 was dropped 3/4 and while it had a certain look with 275's all around, it couldn't take 200# in the bed before the springs contacted the bed supports because of the drop shackles.

an LSx won't make the front go down, if anything you might lose weight.

(wanna sell the truck to me?)

my favorite, not because of looks cause it was fugly and rusty, was my 88 silverado 2wd. i swapped in a 1970 365hp/525ft. lb 472" cadillac and th400. that truck was FAST on the rare occasion i got it to do anything besides spin the tires.

my current and hopefully for a long time daily is a 90 3500 w/ 454 and 4 speed manual and just turned 84,000 miles.

Get some Monroe Sensitrac load leveling shocks. They are progressive and won't chenge the ride height, but with a load they get progressively stiffer. I noticed no difference in ride quality except it rode better with a load . Not to mention, they're cheap I believe I paid $100.

i honestly wouldnt touch one of the new gm 5 or 6 speed for a swap. the transmission computer is in the transmission and the only way to comunicate with it is through can (controlled area network) protocal. it would be next to impossible to get it working right.

i would do a big block with a 4l80e. the 4l80e is basicly a th400, just electronic and with overdrive. there are controllers to run them. a big block would be sweet, especialy if you could find a used 8100 (502) to start with.

wow, didn't know the 5L and 6L TCM were internal to the transmission. I guess I'll forget that idea then . . . so 4L for sure, then.

Anyhow, I'll prob be keeping my eye open here and there for a PMD bb. We've got a couple of old cbb layin around the shop, but I've always preferred PMD's powerband and torque curve. If I go old school bb, I'm thinkin I might shoot for two 4-barrels as I don't think a MFI setup would really be efficient enough for it.

Still meaning to post up some pics of this truck, when I remember one day after gettin home from work
