  • evaporator problems

first off i just hit 200,000 miles in my Z26!!!!!!!!! you wouldnt know it though.

anyway does anyone have any diagrams on how to access the evaporator so i can clean it. it wont even drain while the a/c is running and smells like cat piss at times. i dont wanna spend 60 bucks on the sprayfoam stuff considering that u cant really see if it "really" did claen the fins off. its like a crap shoot. if i do it myself i know its clean.

any help would be great Thank You!!

    Respectfully,
    Phil

You can get to it by taking off the blower motor fan housing (the big metal black box). Make sure to use some caulk or something putting it back on other wise when it rains it will leak inside the car from the firewall. (it will run down the firewall, into the box, then underneath your carpet)

Other than that to get the other side I believe it goes through the heater core drip pan stuff... But the outside usually gets leaves and dirt..

Take some pictures if you can. I thought the evaporator was something else, but I don't know anything about AC systems.

Evaporator coil is where the blower fan blows air through and makes the cool air. The r134a is a liquid after being compressed and condensed and expands to a vapor through it and thus gets cold. This expanding is why it's called an evaporator since it's going from a liquid to a gas.

The condenser is in front of the radiator and is used to cool the refrigerant from a high pressure gas to a liquid after it has been compressed by the compressor. It's condensing the high pressure gas down to a liquid.

Perhaps you are thinking of the expansion valve? Both start with an E... Or maybe the dryer?

No, i was thinking of the condensor at first but then I figured it would be the condensor because it cools the gas back to liquid. That is about all I knew:P Never had to mess with AC besides the compressor.

My compressor is leaking. I've got the gauges and a vacuum pump so I can recharge systems. I dropped off my compressor to get new seals put in it so soon I will be throwing it back on and have A/C for the first time in about 2-3 years! woo hoo. It's pretty simple to work on A/C stuff. I wish the 94+ style compressors didn't leak so bad around the housing... threw on a used one that "held pressure" and it leaked out in a week.

I have to pull the compressor off the 96 GTP because the clutch is constantly wearing (see small metal particles and hear it screaching). I want AC on that car but for now ill take one that works to sit there and let the belt ride on it.
