  • Tire Thread!

I'm tired of flirting with death every time it snows. The only brand markings I can find on my tires are "Aqua Sport." They dont even grab on dry pavement; at all. Sadly they have a decent amount of tread left to them, but theyre fairly dry rotted. Anyways... I guess what I want out of this thread is some suggestions from YOUR experiences, not what you read on tirerack and not what your babys mommas cousins friend Cooter said.

The wheels on the car are 15x? (i think prolly 15x6), tire size on the car currently is 205/60/15

    So heres my criteria:
1.) Gotta fair ok in the snow/rain
2.) LONG tread life is a huge plus
    3.) Rate dry performance on a 1-10 scale (1=crap 10=hottness)
4.) Price Ceiling = $50 per tire less would be great

What car is this on? Which style of wheel is it?

I'm assuming it's on the 'retta... and I oughta be able to identify the wheel's width if it's a stock wheel.

But I've been using Kumho Ecsta 716's on my Sunbird for quite a while now... the fronts lasted about 20k without ever being rotated, and the rears are probably closer to 30k now with plenty good tread yet. I'd rate them about a 7 for performance, they're a "touring" tire, but they're good for an allseason tire. I think mine in that same size were around $42 each the first time I bought them, then about $55 the last time I bought a pair of them to replace the worn out ones on the front. (Do take note, I'm not exactly easy on my tires either.. so you might get more mileage out of em)

I went up a thinly snow covered dirt road up to the top of a mountain the other day... I got some odd looks from people in 4x4 trucks that were going half the speed I was.

Ya were talkin 'retta. It has the silver crosslaced wheels on it. I'm not easy on it at all. Its my winter/UConn car but I still beat the hell out of it.

I use the Firestone Firehawk Indy 500's on my Lumina and they work great in snow, rain, and very well on dry pavement.

Those are 15x7s. I have some Kumho Touring tires on my Volvo and they work just fine in the snow (i can get up the hill in the driveway that even the Jimmy in 4WD can't manage to do sometimes) don't remember the exact model of them, but i know they were cheap and they dont' seem to be wearing down all that much..

The last time i drove the beretta in the winter, it had some MasterCraft MR823 (205/60R15) all-season H-Rated tires on it... they were ok aswell (even my Dunlop D60A2 225/50R16s faired well enough)

Although, ANY winter tire you can get will be most likely better than an all-season for the winter months. And a spare set of wheels is easy enough to come by to have an extra set for the winter time..

Hmmm... I've thought about something like these. I have Firestone Firehawk SS20s on my Grand Prix and I love them. I think they grab really well and they wear extremely slowly, especially considering how often they are abused. I didnt think they were so great in the snow on my grand prix though, but that could be because they are so wide on that rim that they dont really dig into the snow much (16x8 puts down more than a 9" footprint w/245s). I just hope they run a lot cheaper in the 15" size.

I second the comment on the Kumho Ecsta 716's, I bought a set for my mom's Lumina Euro (215/60-16) and they're awesome. Way better than the Firestone FT70c's or whatever were on there before. They grab great in rain, I wouldn't know about snow though. But if you're looking for a cheap tire that's worth its weight in gold, buy those. I might be buying a set of 235/55-16 Ecsta 716's for my Z34 when my Dayton's wear out (they're loud, spongey, and shit in the rain).

I believe the Indy 500 replaced the ss20. They are supposed to grip better and they are quieter.
