  • Crank Pulley Size

Ok, guys. I'm thinking about doing something wierd. What size is our crank pulley? I'm thinking about adding aslightly larger crank pulley to speed up my accesories. The reason, my A/C barely works at idle and same story with my charging system, especially since I put in a high output alternator, I also figure that it can't hurt for my power steering either. Since I do 95% city driving I think It's a good idea, I think the few horse power loss will be worth the convenience. How much bigger will I have to go to increase my puley speed about 250RPM? What do you think?

Speeding up the accessories isn't going to get the A/C to be colder. In all cars the A/C doesn't work as well at idle as it does moving. Reason being you are pulling more air through the condenser while moving.
You'll be compressing the refrigerant quicker, but not pulling that extra air through won't help it cool any better.

acctually u won't even be compressing the refrigerant anymore cause the compressor will be cycled by the pressure switch no matter how fast the compressor turns

So, on top of this I have to re-program my prom to turn my fans on earlier?
But still the alternator is an issue for me. I'd like to spin it about 250rpm faster at idle. I already have a smaller pulley on it, but it has only helped a bit.

Actually, if your car has a V5 compressor (which most of ours have), it should NOT be cycling...

Why does my girl friends '98 chev malibu belt out the cold air at idle, in the same conditions where mine won't?

There could be tons of reasons including but not limited to a low refrigerant charge, clogged evaporator core, insufficient flow through the condenser, faulty control valve, moisture in the system (contaminated dessicant), clogged orfice tube, etc..

It will still freeze me out cruising though, what difference does that make?

Then that sounds more like a lack of airflow through the condenser...

Will turning the fans on sooner help?
