  • RESTORE?

Has anyone used the oil additive called Restore? I have been using it in my 95 Grand Am w/3100 and my wife's 99 Montana w/3400 at every oil change for at least a year now. This product definitely restores horsepower and compression like they claim it does. Here's the problem, just recently I have noticed that the lifters tick really bad after start-up when the car or van has been sitting awhile. This is not the ordinary 60degreev6 lifter rattle that we are used to and I know it has something to do with the Restore because I stopped using it for 2 oil changes on both vehicles and the ticking ceased. I was just wondering if anyone out there has used this product and experienced the same problem?

    Thank you, Corey

my dad put the stupid thick advance auto oil additive in that was supposed to stop smoking, in our old 97 caravan for 100k miles. when i changed the oil and left that crap out, the 100k mile lifter tick went away.

The only oil additive that I have used is "Rislone" that comes in a yellow bottle. It was used in a 95 caddy eldorado with the northstar. Before the car would use approx 1/2 a quart a week after the oil treatment it would go about 2 weeks before needing a 1/2 a quart.

They are all band aid solutions. Why did you even bother using it on a newer car like that? I have a 95 Camaro engine that still has great compression and performance and it has about 200,000KMS on it now.

Rislone smells like kerosene. If you obtain an engine that is gunked up I dont see why it wouldnt hurt to try the kerosene/rislone/restore flush to extend the life of the engine. I mean obviously the engines been hurt already and additives may or may not extend the life of the plant. I think most additives are made to flush all the crap out from lack of maintenance anyway. Most of us here are into older cars and cant always aford the "right" fix like some others. I guess its one of those last resort type of things.

restore has a fine grit in it that wears on the cyl walls and helps the rings get a new "seat". if you use it, you are not supose to use it every oil change.

Great so Restore can make a ring go ping.

I only use seafoam, in oil, fuel and as a top engine cleaner.

Restore does NOT have a grit in it. I thought it might too, but it doesn't. It just seals cracks and the cylinder walls and whatnot Just for clarification
'93 Sunbird. 5spd, 3.1, it's fast. Oh, and 240k miles has proven lethal against Turbo Talons

I'm lurking occasionaly. It's tough because I'm usually too busy with the Army or my 5.0 Mustang. Which is for sale.

No idea. I'm not a damn chemist But it must be some kind of gel (it is blue and very gel-like) that just fills in the cracks and dries

I used a can of restore once.... made no difference at all. If you are going to use it then definently don't use it every oil change. I like using lucas oil stabilizer. My 94 sunbird used to burn through about a quart of oil a month. When I put the 20% stabilizer in it it doesn't burn any in three months (probably because that stuff is as thick as honey.) I also like it for the extra additives, any extra engine protection is a good thing.

To stop oil burning try a high milage oil or a synthetic oil like Redline that uses Ester base stock that will swell up seals.

I used to get a small puff of blue on startup because I dont have exhaust valve seals. But with Redline oil I dont get anything.

i found that using high mialage oil in my old motor (400k km) helped with the oil consumption. before i used it, it would go through about 1l between oil changes (thats not even bad) and after it brought it down to 1/4L.

as for additives that clean the debris in the engine, i dont beleive in em. what i do is use 1-1.5L of tranny fluid into the engine for a couple days before i do an oil change. tranny fluid is designed to break loose and suspend particals in the fluid so they get picked up by the filter. this is perfectly safe and effective.
