  • GM's new direction

alot of the existing and upcoming gm cars are looking good IMO. i am really optimistic that they will indeed turn things around if they keep it up.

i seen a pic or 2 of the g8 and that thing looks sweet as hell and to me doesn't appear to be conventional gm styling(in this case a good thing). just imagine a menage a trois between a gp, a m3 and an evo.

if all their new offerings are or will be as good as the g8 i think gm will save themselves.

i think they have finally beaten the bad rep of non-reliable cars IMO now all they have to do is refine their interior designs to beat the rep of cheap interiors and they will be in business.

Well they now offer very long term warranties on pretty much every car they sell.

My whole family drives GM and none of us have had a major failure due to the vehicle. The worst case was my cousin's 4.3L S-10 that ate its main bearings. But that was his fault for not changing the oil in over a year. But he ate the cost and paid for the fix since he says it is the best truck he has ever owned. The other was my uncles Astro van which he over heated pulling his trailer like a mad man up the highway in the middle of the summer. He cooked the oil and destroyed the mains or rods. The engine still ran with a knock in it so he was able to get $1000 for it and bought a new Silverado. My bros S-10 has 180,000 on it no problems, I have nearly 200,000 on mine and no problems. My neighbour has over 350,000 on hers and it runs beautifully. My cousin has 400,000 on his Silverado and it only needed new front suspension components. Suprising because he drives like a retard. But I have to say the best I have seen is my moms 94 grand and. It has just over 200,000 on it now and it went through me and my brother learning to drive. We absoutly bagged that car I routinly ran it up to 5500RPM every time I drove it and would corner that baby hard. The only thing worng with that car was a mysterious tire wear problem LOL. But since me and my brother bought our own vehicles it has gone away.

So reliability problems? Na I'd say owners of cars are more to blam for problems than anything. Since GM sells the most they have the most problems. Especially since their cars are moderatly priced, the people they sell to are the daily commuters that see their car as an object that needs no attention rather that an assload of moving parts that needs constant care.

I definately agree. I am an import fan, even still, but it seems as though the american car manufacturers are coming around to the fact that they cant keep producing the same mass produced (sorry if i offend anyone) crap cars. But it seems that they are finally coming around to new technology and ideas imports have been using for several years now. Its good to see though. And i agree, that G8 is sick, i saw it in autoweek. Going to the Chicago Auto show in 2 days..... so stoked.

GM still has a ways yet to go IMO. I don't like the idea of constantly making cars heavier and bigger and I don't want to encourage this. Compact cars nowadays are as heavy as midsizes were in the 90's. I know all the major manufacturers are doing this but still.

They'll get my kudos when they take a page from the 'book of Lotus' with a proper performance option having fewer luxuries to save weight, not more.

Azreal I agree with you. But the mass majority don't. Even though real car lovers don't like what GM is or was doing obviously their anual sales say they are doing things right. Like I said before on average they make moderatly priced medeoker cars and that is what the masses buy.

If you want the real performance stuff you need to step up and get yourself a Corvette. That car was totally re designed to save weight for the last 2 generations. Yet it still retains some luxury yet is the cheepest supercar with by far the most aftermarket support.

good points, i think the reason behind bigger cars may be bigger people. gm still has it on performance IMO. that new z06 is sick and the special edition one in 2k9 will be even sicker.

i have seen rumors to save weight the "blue devil" will be constructed out of carbon fiber bringing the projected weight down to that of a cobalt. i cannot wait to see that thing in action with a supercharged ls7.
