I just think a fully rebuilt 3.1 with ported heads and intakes and a carb meant for top end power only makes 130 whp is pretty sad is all.

The engine normally puts out 109-110 hp at the wheels with the manual transmission. Less with the auto.
The real problem with opening it up is that the iron heads do flow well when ported, but, the power band moves up to 4,000 to 5,800 rpm and is actually very strong even over 6,000 rpm. Usable on road racing but not good out of the hole.
The second problem is the exhaust. The manifold is poorly designed. It will take equal length headers to actually free up what the engine can potentially do. I'll be dyno'ing the engine again after advancing the cam timing (to lower the power band) and adding headers.

Ben,
The Fiero dresses out at about 2500 lbs modified. The Cavalier was, if I recall correctly, 3200 lbs. The Fiero has run under 15.5 sec. and the Cavalier with its automatic would be at least a second slower, probably 1.5 secs. I think most stock Cavalier 3.1's run 16-17 secs in stock trim?
Redbird, the Fiero was rated at 140 in 1985 and 135 in 1986 and up.
Shaun, you have no numbers to show us. You keep talking about 3.1's when we are talking about porting an iron head 2.8. You obviously can't read. Right now it appears you don't know what you are talking about. In other words, show us your sheet or please stop making an idiot of yourself.

Go to .nl Over the past 7 years they have been posted there. But do the math 12-15% drivetrain loss of 140 is what? I am not going to do the math.
Oh yea, and fieros dont' weigh 2550 unless dry. With driver they are closer to 2900 lbs and 2700 lbs sans driver. I hate it when people underinflate the actual weight of a Fiero. THey are heavy. CAvalier might weigh a tad more but not by much
but so he went from 140 hp, to 165 crank hp with the ported heads, fresh engine, and a carb. Not impressive. 165 is weak. which is why his fiero runs 15's barely better then stock.

Ben wasn't far off
The '85 GT is a notchback style. The fastbacks were heavier, as were the autos. My car has been lightened up quite a bit. There is no A/C, lighter wheels, no headlight motor units or doors, lighter exhaust, and no sunroof. Also, the stock plenum system and air breather is removed with a much lighter carb/Edelbrock intake. I think I have saved at least 50 lbs.
Fiero Curb weights fully serviced with all fluids
85GT-2572 Lbs
86SE-2531 Lbs.
87SE-2567 Lbs.
88Formula-2547 Lbs.
Fastbacks
86GT-2696
87GT-2708
The horsepower was 140 but in 1985 the EPA testing changed the rpm at which hp was reported so it dropped to 135 for '86 and subsequent years but the engines were identical.
The 1990 Cavalier curb weight for the base 2 door was 2509, however, the auto tranny, v6, A/C, and other trim options would put it up from there.
The main drawback I found with mine was the 3 speed auto, which is similar to the Fiero auto. Fiero autos also do about 16 -17 sec on the quarter mile when stock.
The TrackMasters dyno above was performed on a stock 2.8 with 70,000 mi.
Here is another one from a guy who was experimenting with tuning and re-programming the stock 2.8. The red line is his original reading with the blue line showing his result after careful tuning with modified chip.
Some guys have reported 115 hp but most not that high, and generally not 100% stock. One of our local guys with a 2.8 auto reported 93 whp.
Hope this clarifies the info.

I dont' care what a book says. I actually weighed my old 85GT on a race weigh scale.
My car with about half a tank of gas, the passenger seat removed, spare tire and jack removed, weighed in at 2690 lbs. Thats with 60 lbs taken out of it with those 3 things. It was 2900 lbs in everyday driving conditions. THATS HEAVY!!!
I had the auto, power everything.
The autos were a TH 125C tranny 3 spd auto. Different from the 3t40 but not sure how.
Arn your car is nowhere near 2500 lbs. Please go get it weighed. you will be dissapointed. WIth you in it, its probably close to 2900 lbs.

And This has to do with porting Cylinder heads how??? Though I don't feel dumber for watching two people have a pissing match. The subject at hand is porting on Iron Heads not how much a Fiero weights. Many variables are in this. If he bought a rebuilt engine and got a camshaft that was mabye smaller than the HO on the stock Fiero then maybe he has done good. I'm not trying to say what he did is crap or what he did was a bitchin mod. There is always someone with a faster car deal with it... Get back to the subject Porting, close the thread, or move it to some place where these two can get there triple beam scales out and measure and wieght every bolt on their cars...Last edited by ignoreance; 01-27-2007, 08:37 PM.
