  • Double Clutching and stuff

I've heard the term "double clutching" used before (ie. F&F) and wasn't sure what it was, so I looked it up on some various boards and I think I get the jist of it. I don't know much about manual transmissions, but from what I read double clutching isn't really nessesary on modern transmissions because the synchros do the work- however if you do then it saves wear on them.

I was wondering who here double clutches, does the toe and heel thing. My next car will be a 2nd gen Z24 5-speed (will be my first manual car) so I wanna know all the tricks to drive it fast and not wear out the tranny

I see the point more-so in downshifting, but what about upshifting? Is it much different to just tap the gas while the clutch is engaged before shifting to the next gear, or is double clutching really better? Maybe some people that are more experts on the Z24 manual tranny can shed some light on this topic for this particular car.

Double clutching was often required in a time before synchros. I had the opportunity to drive a 1931 Reo Royale with a 3 speed and square cut gears. There is no way you could down shift unless you double clutched. There is a great article at howstuffworks.com on how manual transmissions work. It's got some nice little things to play with and you'll understand how the need to double clutch disappeared with synchros. http://auto.howstuffworks.com/transmission.htm

when 1/4 mile drag racing i dont even let off on the accel pedal, i hold her to the boards and shift those fucking gears and hammer that clutch pedal as fast as i can....

the bully clutch holds that pig from slipage. its great.

double clutching = on modern synchro equiped cars.

Holey fuck man! That's insane... I at least "stab" the clutch when I shift.

Well I've heard people on the w-body board talking about bad syncros on their cars.. I've never had problems with automatic so when I get a 5-speed I don't wanna have to be getting shit on that fixed too.
Is there much difference between the trannys in the j-body 3.1 and w-body 3.1, other than the gears?

That's how to do it Just push the clutch in just before redline, so it revs just enough so when you let off the clutch, its perfect in the next gear. Even better with a turbo car, don't have to worry about losing the boost from the BOV. My uncle always did it without letting off in his Corvair's

oh yeah you poor bastids with that 284...

during city cruising half the time i never use my clutch to shift, both for up and downshifting, just match revs. only use it for 1st then get lazy and just shift by rev matching.

WHen you shift gears, you can rev it up for a downshift to match the RPM the gear would put you at. If its an upshift, you have to let the engine rev down. I set my IAC so it drops pretty close to the time I normally shift while driving.

when i drag race my auto in my 3.1 i like to start in second then at 20 i upshif in into third and then at 40 or 50 i pop in into the D and just mash the gas into the floorpan! But when im driving around i pop it into Neutral before coming to a stoplight and then once it turns green i pop it back into drive and it jumps a little and i just keep going..am i hurting anything by doing that?

Yeah, I rev match on occasion, but not with the pedal buried in the carpet. As in, rev to 3000rpm, then ease off the gas and coax the shifter into the next gear.

I had to drive ~100 miles home like that once when my hydraulic release bearing took a big shit.

Had to start the car in 1st gear to get moving, then match revs... that's about the only time I ever intentionally ran a stop sign/light. I wasn't stopping if there was nothing coming!

A friend of mine used to have an F-350 SUPER DUTY pickup with a 5-speed for his daily driver. He used to drive it like that. Of course, he only had one leg (thanks to cancer). It was something to see him drive that puppy.

Double shitting is never any good, but it really only happens when I'm not feeling good.

Honestly though, I used to double clutch my Mazda 323 (far from a performance car or engine) because it seemed to help the poor thing out. Plus I felt cool like I was driving a semi or something. That's just how I was taught to do it though.
