Hello all, I have a 92 Grand Prix. I have the stock Delco radio in and am trying to swap in a newer Delco in its place.

I recently purchased a headunit from a 2004 Grand AM headunit. Double din, CD/radio/MP3. Theftlock II is disabled. I tried wiring the new unit to stock harness via aftermarket harness.

No such luck. I was able to hear drive mechanism when I pressed eject button, and the clock display did show up, but thats about it.

After doing some research, I came to see something about class 2 serial data and how these radios are used for much more (as in car alarm, etc runs thru radio).

Is it possible to get this newer unit to work in my car?

is it a monsoon deck??? if it is, it does require the factory amp to go with that deck. if it does send serial data to and from the deck, it may be hard to get it working.

aside from that, you may want to look into the aftermarket for a deck. you can get a half decent mp3 deck for under $200, and in the long run, you save yourself a huge headache trying to get newer factory stuff to work.

That just about brought a tear to my eye.

Here's the scoop....

The only way to get that newer deck to work in you car, aside from it being too large (double din vs din and a half), will be to buy a device that mimicks the serial data that is sent to the deck, to tell it to turn on and off. There is a device available to do this, that is used by repair technicians to repair these decks.
The last price I heard was well over $200, and it was about 10" by 6" by 8", though I'm sure you could take it apart and put the internal electronics in a smaller package.

By the time you get this device and install it to run the newer factory deck, you'd be worlds ahead to just buy an aftermarket deck, for the same or less money, get far better features and more upgradability.
