  • What would you do?

    Looking for opinions.....

I have a 99 Grand Prix SE, Which I am putting all the GT glitz on the outside for appearance. The car is in need of a transmission rebuild. Currently has a 3100 power plant.

I have a 3400 complete sitting on an engine stand. I also have a 3800 complete sitting on an engine stand. Both staring at me every time I walk in my shop. I have the wiring harness and a pcm for the 3800.

All I need to do is build a transmission. 4T60E for the 3400, or a 4T65HDfor the 3800.

    What would you do?

find a hm282 5 stick and go megasquirt with the 3400. full tunability with a fun to drive manual tranny, unlike the real GTs, or any other similar grand ams in your area.

Grand Prix GT is 3800. id prefer a 3400 with 3500 top end swap. Probably get you damn near the 3800 rating with just ported manifolds, and less weight. Not sure how much more work it is to swap a 3800 in but its probably not difficult in a grand prix that came with it as an option. I can't say I would do a 3800 though anyway. Im biased:P

Its ok Ben, I promise I wont abandon the 60V6 world if I do put the 3800 in it.

What did you think it was a Grand Am?

You still have me pondering the idea of a 5 speed. :/

yeah, i saw 3400 and thought grand am. I'm just hatefull of autos since i havent had but 1 that gave me no problems, i drive an explorer and fantasize about a 5 speed swap everyday. The megasquirt ecm is supposed to be the way to go if you do alot of modding. Its cheap, because you need some soldering skills to put it together, and fully tuneablefrom a pc. Some makes/models dont go from auto to manual easily, sometimes stalling out when they think they should shift. a 5 speed swap would be involved since GP's didnt come with a stick at all if i remebeer correctly. maybe the 2200 ecotec 4 banger might have but im not sure.
