  • w body and quad 4???

today i was at a local pick a part and i stumbled across a 1990 cutless supreme, all that was left in the engine bay was a 5 speed getrag trans. engine tag said 2.3l and it was vin code A, meaning it was a high output quad 4. i didnt even know they had 4 cyl in w body cars, never mind with a 5 speed. im guessing this wasnt a common combo. were there other w body cars with quad 4's in em???

i asumed the tranny was not the desired gearing, so i left it, however i did score the aluminum axle tube setup off of it. there was no bracket for it, but im sure it wouldnt have worked anyways being it was a q4.

only the Grand Prix and the Cutlass Supreme were available with the Quad-4. i think the Cutlass Supreme was the only one available with the HO Quad-4 though.

threre were other 4 cylinders available in W-bodies. i think some early Luminas got the 2.5L Iron Duke and the 2.2L later on.

i thought the Q4 282's had more desirable gearing, at least differential gearing anyway? i could be wrong, i've not dealt with any 282's for a few years

i think it would be worse...at least in my case. the last thing i need is a 3.94 FDR! i'd probably be spinning all the way through 3rd no problem! for a low powered heavy W-body (with a V6), the Q4/282 gearing might be better, but the more power and ecspecially the more torque you make the less gear you need obviously.

too bad i'm stuck with 3.61 FDR. i'd rather have something like 3.05 FDR!

i still want J/L V6/282 gears installed into my W-body 282 case. i'd still be stuck with the same FDR but at least the speed gears would be better.

the 92-94 quad 4 ho and w41 had the 3.94fdr. 90 used the 3.61, but there were other gearing changes. i know the w body v6 got a 3.73 1st opposed to the 3.50 in a j body.

mine is actually 3.77 1st but close enough :P i think the 3.50 1st gear would help a bit with traction....at least i wouldn't have to go to 2nd gear immediately like i do now. same deal with 2nd gear. right now i have 2.19 2nd gear and i want the J/L V6/282's 2.05 2nd gear. 3rd gear seems to be the same throughout the Getrag 282 family. i'd just as soon keep my current 1.03 4th gear for slightly better acceleration in 4th than the .94 4th gear the J/L V6/282 uses. i also want the .72 5th gear from the J/L body V6/282 to improve highway mileage over my current .81 5th gear.

            i need to find me a J/L V6 282 so i can get my W-body V6 282 rebuilt the way i want it

now iirc, 1st and 2nd gear are part of the counter shaft, and 3rd and 4th are part of the input shaft, and 5th is seperate. so if you want to change 1st gear, you would have to change 2nd (unless your old 2nd gear is the same). same deal with 3rd and 4th (although 3rd is the same throughout the family). 5th gear is independent, so you can do what you want with it.

even with the 3.50 gearing, 1st gear is almost pointless in my car. id like the 2.19 2nd to make the 1-2 a close ratio, however that makes 2-3 a bigger jump, and the rpm drops enough as it is on the 2-3 shift. the 1.04 4th gear would be great and im just shifting 4th through the top end.

to be honest i'm not familiar AT ALL with the internals of the Getrag 282. but i do want to change 1st & 2nd gear out together. if i could have ALL J/L V6/282 gears intalled into my W-body V6/282 case i'd be happy.
