  • Ford = job security (and a massive headache)

Thank god our shop has been closed yesterday and today. Out of the 3 days we were opened this week, I only clocked about 12 hours of work, thanks in part to having too many Ford's on the lot. My RO's for the week went like this:

    Mon:
'98 Ford Explorer - Tranny service; LR & RR axle seals (includes rear-end service); rear parking brake shoes; drain & refill coolant; LOF
'98 Ford Taurus 3.0 OHV - (this one is still holed up at the shop, can't figure it yet) came in with a dead hole #5 cyl. replaced plugs and plug wires (plugs were worn the hell out, the plugs and wires were OE); no change - did a compression test, all cyl passed with flying colors; checked injectors for spray, passed; checked for spark, little weak - replaced the coil with a known good unit (brand new coil pack I keep in my box); no change; hooked up the scanner and noticed some odd voltage coming from the CPS intermittently - ordered one up from Ford, won't show up until Mon - so far, only 2 hrs diagnostic time billed

    Tue:
'00 Ford E250 Conversion (I hate Conversion vans, I hate Ford Vans; I REALLY hate Ford Conversion vans) - RS exhaust manifold gasket (no where near as easy as an Expedition); diagnos AC leak, replaced front evap core and recharged AC system; drain & fill coolant; P/S pump; replace muffler with universal unit; rotate and balance 4 tires

    Wed:
'97 Ford Taurus 3.0 DOHC - diagnos P/S leak; replaced P/S pump - new pump blew out the outer seals of the rack unit; replaced rack & pinion (not a fun job); replaced in-line P/S filter; diagnos drive belt noise - AC pulley bearing trashed; recommended a new AC compressor - too expensivefor customer, we replaced the AC clutch and pulley - no warranty on parts; coolant flush and replace thermostat (might as well, you gotta pull the WHOLE FRIGGIN RADIATOR and CONDENSER to get the AC compressor out)

Ford's done fucked my paycheck, dammit; not looking forward to going back to the shop next Mon, we still have a Bronco chillin on the lot waiting for a fuel pump, an F150 with a shredded 1st gear, another F150 with a novel of broken shit, and an F350 diesel with a cold stall issue.

        FORD
        F....d On Remittance Day

And think of all the Volvos coming in, that can't get over 30 mph.

working in a tranny shop, job security for me is fords in general, dodge fwd, and the 4t65e and 4l60/4l60e. i see so much of that stuff its not funny. 4 caravans last week, over the norm, but far from my record of 7 in one week.

at times i wish i was paid by book time. when i can re/re 3 caravans in a day, and they are 4.6 hours re/re, i could stand to make a bit more than i am now. or the 99 pathfinder clutchjob i did last week, book calls for 10.4 hours, did it in a little over 4.

Look, GM has their issues with cars, and Chrysler has their problems, but ford is despicable. Especially when you see just how many of them have steering assist and rack issues, misfires, failing coils, bad brake master cyl's, ABS problems, and these things happen well under 100k miles. Everything falls apart. I wish I was awake enough tonight to list them. I work at a shop part time as a service writer for the past few years, and I've seen some serious shit, like people's wallets being drained by these Ford POS's that aren't even that old! THOUSANDS of dollars worth of repairs on things that shouldn't fail in the 1st place, but the owner really has no recourse with the dealer. And the new vehicles out are just redesigned POS's. EVERY owner tells me this too. Sickenly embarassing to the domestic car industry.

working in the transmission industry i dont see all those other problems. typicaly we see most mini vans, chrysler ford and chevy between 80-130k km needing transmission overhauls. usualy see the domestic cars between 100 and 150k km, and as for trucks, depends on what they are put through. heavy work trucks and diesel performance guys, we see those anywere between 70 and 120k km. if its just a daily driven truck, usualy they last 180k km .

i honestly think those numbers suck. i mean, most domestic vehicles go just over 100k km on a transmission. many vehicles the tires and brakes outlast the transmission. as for imports, mazdas suck, but pretty much all others will last 250k km or more before we see them.
