Oil changes

I used to work witha guy "george" who used to work in a shop. He told us about this regular customer, some crazy old guy I guess. He would come in for oil changes but he knew the guys pretty well, so he would just change his own oil. But heres the kicker....He would drain out oil from their used dirty oil bin and use that in his truck. That's not all.... He would also use some ones used oil filter too. His truck never died though. But I guess a couple years went by and he came into some money. So he decided he should get his engine rebuilt. So he took it to the shop, and my friend george rebuilt it. He said that he all most shit when he pulled it apart, the bearings were perfect, like they put in yesterday. What the fuck? Spend tons on preventative maintenace and synthetic oils, and there's guys like that. Doesn't that make you want to puke?

I guess if you just keep up with oil changes, then you shouldn't have a problem. Plus maybe he took the dirty oil from the top of the container

i had a 91 caprice that i didnt do oil/filter change in for 40k miles and when i pulled the valve covers off (one rusted through from road salt) it looked clean as new in there.

my old 89 vic i never changed the filter, just added old used oil as necessary because it leaked about 5 quarts a week. i used nasty old oil, old burned trans fluid, shit with brake or power steering fluid mixed in, stuff that even had anti-freeze in it and it never missed a beat.

the lumina gets 9 new quarts and a new filter every 2k miles(roughly once every year and a half)

jeeze and I change my oil religiously every 3k miles and use the best syn oil and the best fliter I can find, the oil normally comes out still clear when I change it.

We did that with the honda civic, used the oil from the other car and a new filter. Never had engine problems, just cv joint.

I have put too much time and money into building my engine to treat it like that. It gets an oil change RELIGOUSLY every 3k miles and I run SYNTHETIC. I know my luck. The one time that I do something bad like that, it woudl blow my engine up.

sure, if you have a nice garage where I can change my oil, ive been having my shop do it since its gotten so cold. I have no garage and changing my oil in a street that is rarely plowed is not something I intend on trying.

Are you sure you want my old oil? If you want to help me, we can go drian my old 2.8, and put that in your 2.8. I need to drain it anyways. I need to get it on the stand so that I can start dismantling it. I am DYING to see what all is in there. 313,368 miles of crap probably.

And what of that study that compared the longevity of NYC taxicabs whose oil was changed every 3000 miles vs every 7500 miles? I believe there was no significant difference between the two groups.

Taxis are at operating temp for almost all of those 7500 miles. If 7500 sounds a lot, the parks department my dad works for changes the oil in all the trucks once a year! He actually told the auto shop that there's the reason all the 350's in the trucks crap out the lifters before 100k

I know what you mean about the cabs, I got a ride once and me and my buddy were talking about cars. The cabbie pipes up, (in an east indian accent, of course) "If you want a good car, buy one of these." "500000Km, all city, original motor." I fucking laughed my ass off! It was like a Crown Vic. or something.

Oh wait I got another cabbie story. This one time On my birthday we were gettinh a ride back from a club. The cab was one of those retired crown vic police packages. So we pulled up to this light next to this riced out civic. I'm yellin' out the window at this guy, trying to get him to race. He just gives me a dirty look, and the cabbie says a honda civic those don't have any power. This car is a police special 350 HP he says. the light turns green, He smokes 'em off the line just embarrases this civic, who was trying his best you could just hear the 5" muff rapping out. It was awesome, then he contiued to smoke 'em off at every light next to this civic. Now that's a cabby

Last time I was in a cab the guy called his cab "Happy Cab 15"... he was a very happy guy, it was cool and weird at the same time. He had a stereo, flashlights on the headligher/disco ball! LOL everything.

Anyways back on topic...

I've thought about re-using a good synthetic oil several times, and just changing the oil filter. Would probably have to be on a fairly clean engine though..
What do you think?

I think it's fine but what I would be concerned with is getting and dirt/debris in the oil while draining it. I think you would need some kind of set up for that. But some forums say you can get up to 30000 miles or more if your driving conditions/habits are OK. I think they said change the filter but not the oil. Under "extreme" conditions such as all stop and go traffic they said you can get 6000 plus miles. How are you going to know if it's breaking down, without doing an oil analysis?
