[3100 MPFI]

a little more than a year ago, I bought a 1990 Grand Prix STE on Ebay for $200.00 I did not really plan on winning it, but the owner had put in that it had a blown head gasket, so nobody else bid on it, and I won it for my only bid. $200.00 I had to trailer it home, but I finally got it up, and running.

It is a regular 3.1, but I am fine with that. I am actually GLAD that it was not a turbo because the previous owner drove it for some time with a blown headgasket, and the heads were warped. No telling what all would have been wrong with it if it would have been the turbo, and he did that too it.

Now that the pink car has been totalled, I decided that all my attention will go to working on it, and the Cutlass. I bought the pink car from the insurance company. The car was REAR ENDED, so the entire drivetrain is still good.

Here are some pics of the STE. So far all I have done to the car (other than getting it to run right) is I replaced the carpet with a black one, installed the Buick shifter knob, and replaced the speakers with Rockford Fosgates.

I meant to ask, with that new carpet. I know the replacements are a lot lighter, but do you hear any more road noise inside the car vs having the heavy stock carpet?

i put new carpet in my cavy. first off, yes its a lot lighter, and i mean a lot. my old caroet had to weigh 50+lbs, the new stuff i can easily pick up with one hand, mabey 20lbs. the new carpet did only have the jute underlay around the tunnel for heat protection. i dont notice anymore roadnoise, but my car was loud anyways.

Nice car......I see it has a HUD....I didn't think they the STE's came w/ huds....maybe they did.

been on the road, so I have not really been able to check in.

SOME of the STE's got the HUD, but with this being a 1990, it would have been a GEN 1 HUD. Several years ago, while I was still living in New York, I had gone to a junkyard, and there was a 1992-1993 grand prix there that someone had taken the IP carrier, but nothing else. It had a complete HUD setup sitting in the back seat. All I had to do was cut out the 2 connectors.

The dash from that car was gone, and the height adjuster for the HUD was broken (of course). I had tried to sell it on Ebay, but nobody bid, so it ended up in my closet once I moved back to Texas.

The STE was only missing like 4 options when I got it. No HUD, no ABS, no TURBO, and no LEATHER. I have installed the HUD, and got everything working.



BRIAN, as for the sound, with 20 new rockford fosgate speakers in there, I never really have the radio quiet enough to tell if there is more road noise.

As for the exterior damage, the wheels need to be repainted (the clearcoat is coming off, and turning yellow). The drivers door handle trim ring is broken, and the passenger mirror assembly needs to be replaced. The whole thing was broken, so I put the manual one from the pink car onto it. It had power, but both of the motors were bad anyways.

Also, the roof has some damage to the clearcoat, but it is not losing its paint.

Looks very similar to mine. Only options mine doesnt have are HUD, ABS and Turbo. I dont really want ABS so thats good. I got mine off ebay for $860.

i was also wandering about the road noise on the car,but found my self impressed on 20 rockford speakers,if you dont mind post pics to see your system.
also whats driving the 20 apeakers

For now, I am just getting the speakers in. The original speakers were blown, so I could not turn the radio up without it making those popping sounds.

For now, the speakers are just being driven by the stock Grand Prix CD player.

The STE comes with an 8 speaker setup. The rear 6X9's are DVC speakers. The doors have 6.5 rounds, and then there are 4 tweeters. The STE does NOT have dash speakers.

All of my new speakers are Rockford Fosgate PUNCH components speakers, except for the ones I put in my dash. Those are rockford fosgate POWER speakers with an integrated tweeter.

Most of the new speakers are tweeters, and all of the speakers have crossovers (except for the rear speakers).

The rear speakers are 6X9's with 2 tweeters in each speaker. I did NOT install the crossover for the rear speakers so that the stock wiring could run the TWEETERS, and the 6X9 is run off of the SUBWOOFER wires. That makes it so that the BASS is adjustable with the stock GAIN CONTROL slider in the drivers door.

The rear doors have the stock tweeters.

The front doors have the 6.5 components with the 2 tweeters in each speaker, as well as the stock tweeter, and a crossover to keep it clean.

I installed the dash speakers that have the integrated tweeter.

That makes it with 6 in the rear deck, 2 in the rear doors, 8 in the front doors, and 4 in the dash. so I really have 6 speakers, and 14 tweeters.

I am not going to do anything else until I get a new head unit for the dash. I am currently looking at the PIONEER 1.5 din units. I don't like the look of a single din radio in a larger hole. Just does not look right.

I will do stuff with the amplifiers after I have a good head unit in there. And only if I feel like going overboard with it. I kinda went overboard as it is now.

thanx,that looks more simple then what i imagine,i do sq competition and all i use for speakers is 2-61/2 mids and s set of horns for fron stage and 2 10' woofers for bass.that's why i asked .

I really am not big on too much bass. I like a nice full sound. I can tell youright now that I have WAY too many tweeters, but I am going to leave it alone for now. I am going to get rid of the stock tweeters once I figure out how to mount the new tweeters in the stock locations.

For now, it actually has a good sound even though I am using the stock head unit. Once I get an aftermarket unit in it, I can adjust it better, and will decide where I want to go from there.
