  • 06 Monte

Well, this wasnt really mine but....It sure was fun.

I went to Daytona last weekend for the ARCA race and Bud Shootout and had an 06 Monte with a 3900 under the hood for my rental. This puppy was brand new with 32 miles on it when I picked it up at Orlando Airport and lets just say it was broken in properly.

It handles like a dream with lots of muscle off the line and plenty of power through the entire RPM range. Very smooth and yet aggressive when you want it to be. Braking and cornering were fabulous with very good response and little fade, even when hot. One of the coolest things it had were braided steel brake lines, YES braided steel brake lines from the Master Cylinder to distribution/ABS block then at each wheel.

My only complaints are some wind noise above about 80 and a serious lack of adequate stereo/speakers (which was expected with a stock setup). Just the same, the stereo has nice features including steering wheel controls, and a dash input (1/8" Stereo headphone jack) for mp3 players, etc.

Interior was comfortable and easily adjustable for me being a large framed 6'2". The back seat left a bit to be desired, but name one 2 door vehicle that any one over 5 has an easy time getting in and out of.

This is a shot of it in Orlando, just before dropping it back off at the airoport and returning home to Detroit. I wished I had a better color, but this was the only one there, and the first 06 monte they had received, the rest came in the day after I picked mine up or I would have had a red or black one.

Just thought I would post first thoughts.

No engine bay shots? Id like to see what kind of room there is in the engine bay of a W body 3900, considering they are also putting the V8s in those (i think they are anyway).

Sorry, no shots of the engine bay. Didnt think of that till I posted this one. But I can tell you there is plenty of room for a V8 under the hood. It is also funny you should mention that. One of the security guards at Daytona Speedway was checking the car out and asked if it was RWD, and insisted it was until I popped the hood, then he said it must be the SS that will be the V8 RWD. I have not heard any such information myself.

They are putting v8s in them. The SS editions come with a 5.3 Litre 303 hp V8 with displacement on demand(where half of the engine shuts down on the highway for better MPG). The 0-60 is around 5.8ish for the Monte and Impala. I like the new Montes alot better than the old ones. They are all fwd. Nice cars though.
