  • Aftermarket steering wheel for air bag cars write up and pic

I finally have everything right! This was supposed to be a lot simpler then it was.

I wont go into the directions of removing a steering wheel, the info is there.

I will tell you about the things I had to do to get this to work.

First off the hub had too much resistance from the plastic sheath of the column. Much of that came from a tab used for part of the air bag. I had to trim that. It still wasnt enough. I had to use an exacto knife and get little slivers off the edges of the column. I then had to sand it smooth. Just to be anal I applied some WD40 and sanded the very edge of the aftermarket hub, where it made contact. This solved the problem and the steering is velvetly smooth.

Next issue was the horn button. The first button I got was not internally grounded and in order to work I had to make up a ground for it and get a little creative. I found out another horn existed that had an internal ground......still didnt work. So after a trip to my stereo shop and some advice I made up a groud for the first horn button and got the horn to work.

Was it worth it? Absolutely. The diameter is perfect. GM is notorious for excessively large wheels. Also it makes the steering more direct as I can turn almost 90 degrees with one hand, one motion thanks to the increase in leverage. Also the air bag wheel had 4.5lbs of weight up front, the aftermarket hub is weighted towards the back.......it really changes the feel for the better. It also doesnt look drastic. Its the same wheel used on new EVOs, Elises etc. It doesnt scream aftermarket.

No I will not miss the air bag. I sit close to the wheel and was more scared of it than anything. I have other cars that I drive daily so this being my fun fair weather car I was willing to take the risk and ditch the bag.

For future reference the hub is MOMO part number 2401 which is good for all GM cars 69 and up.

    Here are pics...enjoy.
