Just got my car back yesterday from the shop where my car was painted at. I did all the body work, I just had them spray the paint (primer, actually). It's PPG Black Sealer Primer. I spent 12 hours sanding, after I finished the body work, and they had 2 more guys spend 6 hours finishing it up. Both bumpers had cracks in the plastic so they had to be reconditioned, and the whole roof was messed up. I did the hood myself (sanded to metal, bondo work, and priming (not the final primer job though)) as well as the passenger's door.

Spent $650 on body work / prep / paint / painting. Almost every surface had to be sanded to the metal.

Sorry I'll have the after shots this evening, my DSL at home was going really slow and I got called into work early so I couldn't finish uploading the pics. I love flat black... very nice.

as far as being dull... tint the windows and get gunmetal rims/powdercoat current rims (those are the rims i've been wanting :P) make it like the stealth Z34... that'd be cool

It's not dull... it's FLAT!!! I was going for the flat black look. This is only temporary till I get my real paint job (in another year or so). Pictures don't do it justice though, the black primer really makes every line visible... totally has that stealth jet look.

I've gotten so many compliments already, and I've bearly had it back for 24 hours. The nice thing about primer is there's no curing time so I can get it wet / drive it / park it in the sun and the finish won't change. It just won't last more than a year or two before it starts fading. At least I have a good base to paint over now when I actually paint my car. This is only step two. Step one was all the body work.

Plus, who's ever seen a Z34 in Primer Black? Very unique... especially in an area where there is only one other Z34 that I've seen. I go to the busiest mall in the South Bay (Westfield ValleyFair) about once a week and I've never seen a Z34 there. All the tuner kids there ask about my car.

it is very , very , very bad to leave a car in primer, primer is very absorbant and will let water through and rot your car out and FAST! if you can afford it get it based and cleared, or single stage it up. but definatly seal it. trust me, all i do is custom body work on my free time, and i have a huge list of customers waiting to get there stuff worked on because the quality is that good.

And plus, this is only temporary, I don't like driving my car in the rain anyway (defrost doesn't work, heater don't work for that matter). I'm probably gonna be getting my final paint job within the next 6 - 12 months. My friend has a 70(?) Mustang Mach 1 and had his car in regular 'buy it by the can from Kragen's Auto Parts' grey primer for almost 2 years. He didn't mention there was anything wrong with the surface underneath when he had it painted (he's the one who helped me learn how to do body work, he just got done doing an almost 100% body restoration on a 63 t-bird).

The term Sealer is somewhat decieving it doesn't seal out the elements. It is used to help reduce sand scratch swelling, prevent primer bleed through into the topcoat. It helps to provide a uniform surface for the topcoat to be applied to and often times you tint the primer sealer to roughly the same tint as the topcoat. That helps to reduce the amount of coats needed to get the desired finish. Unless your base primer was an epoxy primer your mud work and metal are still at the mercy of all the elements. If you what several years you will be looking at having to strip the car and redoing what has been done. Otherwise you will be looking at a whole host of paint application problems, thay may not show up right away but down the road problems will occur. Plus primers don't have UV resistance and a white haze will eventually form over teh car.
