  • my Turbo 3.1 VIN 'T'/Getrag 282 project (pics added)

hi everyone, i am sorta new here but i thought i'd introduce myself. i own a '91 Cutlass Supreme sedan. the car originally came with an automatic but i swapped a Getrag 282 into it back in the fall of 2001. i've also done a few other things to it like add HUD, TDC rear coilover kit, KYBs, front Eibach lowering springs, GTP 16x8 crosslace wheels, '94+ rear brakes, blah blah blah....

i'm basically here now because i'm finally doing something about the lackluster performance of my 227,000 mile 3.1 MPFI V6. it runs great but it's slow...ecspecially compared to my other car. over the last couple years i've bought all of the turbo specific parts from various Turbo Grand Prixs, i even bought a complete 111,000 mile TGP engine from a '90 Turbo STE i found in the local salvage yard. i was hoping to just change the head gaskets on that engine and install it but unfortunately i found a melted piston while i was tearing the engine down, so the project was put on hold.

last week i pulled the engine/transmission out of my Cutlass and today i tore down the NA VIN 'T' engine in my garage. i know it probably sounds crazy but i'm not touching the shortblock on this thing (see below). i'm doing the head gaskets and just about every other gasket/seal and that is the extent of it. i'm adding all of my TGP parts to it of course; i already have everything needed including a newly rebuilt crossover pipe with SS flex braids and a memcal with TGP/5-speed code on the way from Jay (god910). i'm pretty excited to finally start on this project; i have to admit i've been addicted to Turbo Dodges over the past year or so, but now that i have my other car done (for now anyway) i can finally start on my 660 project

btw, i am buying a 37,000 mile 3400 out of a '99 Grand Am SE from a local body shop within the next two weeks or so....that is the reason i don't want to spend much money on this 3.1L.

i'll post some pics tomarrow, my brother's GF seems to have taken the digicam to a Halloween party or else i'd post some up tonight.

oh, i do all the work on the car myself (ok besides welding...). if i ask any stupid question later it's just because i'm trying to get through the learning curve lol. thanks,

Wow he noticed that the guys at W-body don't really know anything, and that the only way to be fast is to have an L67.

As to your Q. You will be happy. TGPilot raped me running a TGP 5-speed, his only mod being a chip and 12 pounds of boost. But I got him at seal level

I would defiantely use the 3400 over the 3.1, all around better for boost IMO. Better heads, more displacement, etc. I loved his TGP becuz it was unlike any other turbo car I have driven/ridden in. It spooled instantly, like at 2000 rpm. From there it just pulled harder and harder, until it hit 5500, where it shut off(almost literally it lost power so fast). I'd suggest using a bigger turbo, that way it runs to 6. And lag still won't be a big deal as a N/A 3400 has great low end to begin with.

      here's some more....

i pulled the 3.1/Getrag 282 out last week...

      right before i started:

      up and away:

started tearing the 3.1 down last night:

the engine really isn't too dirty inside considering the 227,000 miles. it has more varnish than my blown 111,000 mile TGP engine has, but there isn't any gunk anywhere. i was originally going to throw all of the TGP parts on the engine without even changing the head gaskets but i came to my senses. the lower intake gasket was blown (see pic 402) and i wouldn't doubt the head gaskets are bad too. on my next days off work i'm going to put the engine on the stand and pull the heads off. i'm going to powerwash the engine bay and start removing the AC, install the TGP radiator and intercooler next week.

If I may suggest, sand it all down, clean it up, and paint it with rust protector paint.

I did this to mine, and I'm glad I did. It makes the swap easier, cleaner, etc.

i should, but the engine bay still looks really nice and clean when i powerwash it. besides, in order to paint it i'd have to remove alot more stuff (i'm lazy). despite the high miles, my car has NO rust anywhere.

i had the engine out a little over a year ago and cleaned everything then so it's not too bad right now. although one of the CV boots got a hole in it sometime since then and whipped green grease everywhere

well i'm slowly making progress. i haven't installed the fuel rail & injectors yet (need new o-rings first). the timing cover and oil pump & pan are next....

i set the front valve cover and plenum on for a sec just for pictures sake lol....makes me feel like i'm making progress i guess:

hopefully i'll have this all back together and in the car & running early February. i have everything i need except a few gaskets, the oil pump, and i still need to fab up a turbo support bracket.

No beehive springs on the heads? It looks like the heads were rebuilt, did you just use the stock springs or stock replacement springs? What are you doing for rocker arms, stock? I know your keeping it basically stock performance to save the bottom end, but just wondering if you are doing any beefing up with the valvetrain at all other than just new stuff.

TGP's do spool stupidly fast. Mine is fully spooled to 12psi at 1800rpm. Yes, the turbo is part of the reason it dies up top, however another reason is because of the crappy cam and topend. It can't get any air up top due to the flow characteristics of the Gen II topend. A N/A 3.1 dies above 5500rpm as well, they just fall on their face, a 3100 does not fall on its face so much, although it does a little. With my 3100 heads and Crane 260 cam, mine has more lowend then it had before, it smokes the tires off at any speed at or below 20mph, and keeps pulling hard through the mid-rpms as well, but once it hits about 45-4800rpm it shoots off and starts pulling even harder, and pulls hard right to the limiter. (which I believe is 6k, tach indicates 6200) I think with this setup, even with the crappy T25 that it would pull hard to around 6500, I just need to get the limiter raised. The T25 is not the best solution for a turbo 660, but is plenty capable for most peoples needs. I think just about everyone on here would be satisfied with a mid-high 13 second 660 as a daily driver.

nope, theses are 100% stock TGP heads. the TSTE they came from had 111,000 miles. they were hot tanked and bead blasted, 3-angle valve job done, new expansion plugs and the surface was just barely touched for a good sealing surface for the head gaskets. the only thing that is new is the valve seals and expansion plugs. the lifters and camshaft are from the 227,000 mile 'T' engine. i don't want to spend much money on this shortblock, as i'd rather put my money into my 'V' engine instead later this year, which will basically be a stock rebuild besides .020 over Mahle pistons and maybe a different cam (haven't thought too much about the 'V' engine rebuild yet). i will change the valve springs later too, since i have a valve spring compressor and i can do that myself no problem.
